Forums - Sony Discussion - Breaking News: Sony to post massive $1.7 billion loss

I just noticed something strange in Sony's forecast revision. They have preliminary results for the holiday quarter, which are slightly unprofitable but not as much as the forecast would indicate.

This probably means that due to some accounting details, the bulk of the losses will be pushed to the ongoing quarter. Either that or these preliminary results will get heavily revised. I wonder if this will extend to the gaming division too.

Looks like SCEE doesent seem to be affected with this loss. That's good since i live in Europe, and dont need to worry for my PS2, PS3 and PS2.

They lost a lot of money during this fiscal year. I just hope they will have a better fiscal year and earn more money than they lose.

In what specific way would your PS3/PSP/PS2 be more hurt if SCEE suffers than SCEA or SCEI? The games are developed all over the world.

FishyJoe you seem to be little bit obsessed with Sony losing money. We all saw that news, its on main page of the web site

This is a site about sales numbers for video game companies--it stands to reason that people would be interested in discussing the fiscal health of one of the major (or, hell, any of the) players and, judging by the post count thus far, that is being borne out.

Of course, there is always going to be an element that assumes, because there is bad news for 'their' company, that it's only being discussed in a perverse, voyeuristic, 'I hope they crash and burn' fashion but, thus far, that point of view is not supported by the evidence.

Sooner or later tons of people would create threads about it, so I guess FishyJoe wanted to have an "official" thread about it as soon as possible.

Also, the forum is much better for long discussions than the news articles' comment section.

@ Kasz - you are correct. I have had an awesome opportunity - when I started in the biz, I wanted to work in the major leagues - one of the top 10 papers in the country. I not only accomplished that goal, but I am doing video game reviews for the paper, started a small biz and have earned mad respect with developers, PR firms and the like.

At every paper I have worked at, I've met other folks who know people I worked with or worked at papers I have worked at. You are bound to meet folks who will know someone who knows you.

Wot? Are you saying you're a big shot in gaming journalism?

LOL. Nah, I am not. I work for the 9th biggest paper in the U.S., and a few of my reviews and interviews (the creator of Guitar Hero) have appeared in print. Also, other newspapers (The Charlotte Observer and The Chicago Tribune, and a few others) have picked up my stories. Even Kotaku picked up one of my blog entries.

Big shot? Not yet - I still have to ask for most games - though Ubisoft sends me pretty much everything - but with the exception of Sony and EA - and lately Ninny - any game I ask for to review, I get it.

I love coming here and just being a gamer - most times, unless someone calls me out.

Nice. I thought you only had a gaming blog that no one read lol.

Can u provide some links? To the 9th paper if it's got any of ur reviews published online, to the blog and the Kotaku thingy.

"any game I ask for to review, I get it"  - do they come with the original package or a DVD inside a thin plastic cover?

@ Slimebeast - retail versions of the games. Just like you buy in stores. The last game I bought retail was a used copy of Saints Row 2. Before that ... GTA IV - and the day I got it, I came home and R* had sent me both copies - PS3 and 360 of the game, plus stickers and the Statue of Happiness swag. Good times.

Here are the links: I have to cache some of them ...
