Cell/RSX ohh yahh!

Around the Network

The article spends a fair amount of time elaborating on something I've brought up myself, that the PS3 is actually a better design than the PS2, but it certainly seems to be getting more complaints than the PS2 ever did.  I think the main reason for this is that the PS2 was utterly dominant during the last generation, and developers had little choice but to learn it.  Furthermore, their games were competing against tons of other third-party games on the same platform, so they really had to look good.

The PS3, by contrast, is not utterly dominant, nor does it have the same quantity of titles.  That's why we're seeing things like the Madden situation, because EA isn't willing to pour resources into development the way they would be if PS3 were the undeniable market leader.  And since Sony is of course everyone's favorite target, they blame the Cell because it's an unusual design -- nevermind how good a design it is, or how much of an improvement over its predecessor, it's different and comes with its own challenges, so it must be the Cell's fault.

The important thing is that PS3 is getting some fine exclusives, and those developers are the ones who will be making the most use of its capabilities.  Maybe companies like EA will start to give a damn when their games are compared against the likes of GT5 and MGS4.

@Entroper

EA will only start to give a damn when the PS3 has a larger userbase and can sell as many copies of their games as the 360 can.

 That basically what he said...

It seems the mods need help with this forum.  I have zero tolerance for trolling, platform criticism (Rule 4), and poster bad-mouthing (Rule 3.4) and you will be reported.

Review before posting: http://vgchartz.com/forum/rules.php

It will really only take one developer to crack open the PS3's cell processor to get the other developers to follow suit. really the Next gen is not out of reach for any system to dominate. A few great games that can not be done on another peice of Hardware is all that it takes for consumers and developers to stand up and take notice

Send me a message if you want to be Wii friends.

Truthsayer, just because you want it, doesn't mean it will happen for over 100 years.... also, that was random.

Everyone and their dog bitched about how hard the PS2 was to program for ... That is until the PS2 sold so well that Publishers told developers they HADE to produce a high-quality PS2 version of (pretty much) every game. It never mattered that the PS2 was harder to develop for than the Dreamcast, XBox and Gamecube (or that the PS2 was less powerful than the XBox and Gamecube) developers were told to "Suck it up and learn how to program" because the PS2 version was the most important version.

This generation is playing out quite a bit differently ...

Agreed, I remember hearing a lot of whining about PS2 development.  It didn't stop until it got to the point that the PS2 was so far ahead that developers had no choice.  However, that kind of dominance is out of reach for the PS3, so the developer situation could be tough this time.
