Forums - Gaming Discussion - A 4th Console - Let's talk about Potential 8th Gen Contenders

Let's not discuss or buy into recent company rhetorics regarding current generation console lifespans. Let's instead take a look at the future expanding markets and ponder our way through all the possibilities.

If a company (any company) releases a new system in say 2 years, 4 years or 6 years.. That event will de facto launch the 8th Gen. It does not matter if Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft want the 7th generation to last 'forever'. The fact is that if a company launches a new 'Core' Gaming Platform several years after the competition, they will capture the market (if rival companies doesn't follow suit, that is).

Having established such a scenario we now need to take a look at potential contenders. Some of the companies listed below have the expertice and ability to single handedly or through cooperation with other companies, effectively launch the 8th generation of videogaming.

And this Nintendo DS. - The PS4, this Xbox 360, and the Gaming PC, and the PS3's, and that's all *I* need. And that's *all* I need too. I don't need one other thing, not one... I need this. - The Gaming PC and PS4, and Xbox 360, and thePS3's . Well what are you looking at? What do you think I'm some kind of a jerk or something! - And this. That's all I need.

The only one I could possibly see delving into gaming is Apple, and only the handheld market.

I foresee a bright future for Sega !

Besides Nintendo how many companies have produced a decent return on investment from making a gaming console or handheld?

The only reason most companies would consider it is if they had a reason beyond gaming-related sales to make it worthwhile ...

To me this tells me that service related companies might be interested in consoles, but I would suspect that they would work with an existing console manufacturer rather than trying to produce a successful console of their own.

Virgin? Amstrad (lol at this one).
