Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Is this the last good year for the xbox 360 ?

I wouldn't be surprised if the 360 sells more this year then last year. The 360 has at least 3 great years left in terms of software, no idea about hardware sales though. But even then I expect the 720 and 360 to co-exist for some time.

If MSFT pushes DLable 360 games in the future, then it would give it an even longer lifespan.  Not to mention a user customizable HDD kit.

No to both questions. You could say that the X360 has about the same amount of time to run in this generation as PS3 in the current console generation 3 or 4 years are remaining for both XBox 360 and PS3.

The new consoles will replace them and support for the old consoles would drop off within a year or two. Only market leading consoles get long support and have longest life times.

No.

With a games attach rate like the 360's its gonna be a long time before we see microsofts next console.

The 360's victory margin over the PS3 has been decreasing every week since the beginning of the year, and the PSP may outsell the 360 worldwide this week. It is going to be very close between those two for third.

The smaller victory margin in January is expected.  Wii victory margin look to be down too.  MS must be very happy about 360 performance after the holidays.  Sales for the first three weeks of 2009 outperformed the same period in 2008 nearly 100%!  If this trend hold up into the 2nd quarter.   We can safely mark this up as another year of record breaking gain for the 360.

I hope THEY build a new more powerful console soon that can handle Crysis in Ultra high setting like graphics @ $400 atleast hehe...

no on both. Microsoft is going to want to beat Sony to next gen again, but they don't have to worry about it that much because PS4 isn't coming anytime soon. In 2011 or 2012 we'll see the new xbox, 2011 would be 6 years for the console and it will live in after the release of the new console for a while.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

no its not the last good year

and I don't think we'll see another xbox until 2011 or 2012

If Microsoft was releasing a console in 2009 we would know by now ...

If Microsoft was planning on releasing a console in 2010 there would be developers who were receiving development kits soon, and we would have tons of rumours about Microsoft releasing a console in 2010 ...

When did you know that the 360 was coming out?  Most people didn't know before GDC 2005 or the MTV Special a couple of months later.  I don't remember there being any mention of a new xbox in any publications that I read that were talking about games like Stranger's Wrath or Jade Empire when they were first released.  And there was no information about a year earlier when Halo 2 released in November of 2004.  The biggest XBox news that I remember from that time was that Halo 2 was releasing and that Ninja Gaiden Black and Half-Life 2 were coming to the original xbox in '05.

HappySquurriel is correct.  We would definitely know about the 360-2 by now if it is coming out in 2010.   We knew of the 360 design specs as early as June 2004 (see below link).   And way before this we knew MS was planning a new box when they officially commissioned ATI to design the 360 graphic chip.  This was in 2003 I believe.

And we all knew Sony was in a joint venture with IBM and Toshiba to develop the CELL for PS3 around 2003 as well.  So developers would know about the estimated specs of a new machine about 20-30 months before anticipated release.   And soon after that, the general public would know due to developer leaks.

Microsoft will still support the 360 even if the 720 comes out ..

Remember Microsoft saying the next Xbox console will be backward compatible?

Meaning you can play the new Xbox (720) games on your old 360 but of course they wont look the same, if you play a xbox (720) game on the 360 you will get 360 like graphics, now you if you play the game on the xbox (720) you will see a large improvement..

So for those that dont see the need to upgrade they can still can play a next-gen (Xbox 720) game and play on their 360.
