Hirai: Xbox "lacks longevity"

Sony maintains "official leadership in this industry", says Kazuo Hirai

Sony Computer Entertainment's ever-confident chairman Kazuo Hirai has said that the Xbox 360 "lacks longevity", and remains certain PS3 will finish on top.

Hirai said that, regardless of install base, or who sold more and when, "I'd like to think that we continue official leadership in this industry."

He told Official PlayStation Magazine: "It's difficult to talk about Nintendo because we don't look at their console as being competitors. They're a different world and we operate in our world - that's kind of the way I look at things.

"And with the Xbox - again, I can't come up with one word to fit. You need a word that describes something that lacks longevity," said Hirai.

"Last time I checked, they've never had a console that's been on the market for more than four or five years and we've committed to a ten year life cycle, so you do the math.

"And unless things go really bad," added Hirai, "there's no way that at the end of a life cycle our competition is going to have a higher install base."

Strong.

Oh come on, this isn't any worse than what Nintendo did last gen.

Remember when Nintendo dropped from 199 dollars to 99 dollars? (I don't, I had no clue about sales or prices at the time).

They claimed "Nintendo is creditable for over 90% of the industry growth". It's true, but it's really spinning things.

And there's a lot of other scenarios.

The losing side almost always claim ridiculous things. I'm not sure of why, but it is so in several buisinesses (not a lot, mainly in electronics).

Not this ridiculous though.

the reason the Wii is selling at a record pace is because its appealing to demo's that no other console in history has. Its a compliment....Sony, consumers, MSFT it doesnt matter who says it...i dont understand why people cant just step back and accept the Wii is selling oodles because, 4 nurses i work with talk about "wii fitting" and 3 pharmacists, in their 40's went looking "for the wii fit" .... folks, you can call it denial but the reason the Wii is selling like this is because its different.....the general public, my grandparents and my aunts and uncles, my coworkers and fellow students dont view it as a videogame system in the traditional sense...i dont understand why us gamers and nintendo fanboys also cant. The general public has no problem acknowledging it, but for some reason the "hardcore" crowd does. Weird.

Sony fans talking about "year of th ePS3" are just as bad as videogame fans not accepting the Wii is in a different market...and for gods sake its a GOOD thing, thats WHY its selling like it is. god stop taking it personally because you people label yourselves as gamers....the Wii is different, still a console, but clearly a different market. again not a bad thing, just different.

You mean their one previous console? The one they couldn't wait to dump because it was costing them billions? Apples and dinosaurs, Kaz.

The "Nintendon't count" thing is still sort of funny to me, but it's hard to ridicule him for it when even Nintendo is saying they're not competing with MS and Sony.

lol, Poor Kaz has caught the kutaragitis.

Also there's a general lack of understanding of what 'competition' is. Benga Benga is correct in his assertions and those who disagree will benefit from enrolling in a Business 101 or Economics 101 class at their local community college.

Kh shouldn't say, "hey, we're going to come in last.". He should be saying how they're going to come back with a vengeance. No stockholder is fooled or encourage by an ostrich act.

I agree. Look at the top 10 software units for the Wii and you will see that none of them are even games.

You hit the nail on the head, had a friend over who hasnt touched a console in 20 years we went in and played WII sports he loved it had fun, then we went and tried to play call of duty world at war he couldnt even look up, move around or fire.  Spent 20 minutes and didnt get one enemy.  He will be buying a WII.

PS3, WII and 360 all great systems depends on what type of console player you are.

Currently playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Fallout 3, Halo ODST and Dragon Age Origins is next game
