Hirai: Xbox "lacks longevity"

Sony Computer Entertainment's ever-confident chairman Kazuo Hirai has said that the Xbox 360 "lacks longevity", and remains certain PS3 will finish on top.

Hirai said that, regardless of install base, or who sold more and when, "I'd like to think that we continue official leadership in this industry."

He told Official PlayStation Magazine: "It's difficult to talk about Nintendo because we don't look at their console as being competitors. They're a different world and we operate in our world - that's kind of the way I look at things.

"And with the Xbox - again, I can't come up with one word to fit. You need a word that describes something that lacks longevity," said Hirai.

"Last time I checked, they've never had a console that's been on the market for more than four or five years and we've committed to a ten year life cycle, so you do the math.

"And unless things go really bad," added Hirai, "there's no way that at the end of a life cycle our competition is going to have a higher install base."

I don't really see how investors will look at profits, marketshare and stock performance between the two companies and then hear Kaz seriously tell them that all is good cause Wii is not a competitor.

Shareholder: "But how about Dragon Quest and Monster Hunter Mr. Hirai?"
KH: "Since Nintendo is not in the same market as us it won't impact our sales, I'll ask Media Create to remove all Nintendo related products from there sales lists, since it should be about HD games"

I would be more worried about Sony if the entire company keeps posting billion dollar losses. At least Microsoft or Nintendo never ever posted a loss. Ever. Xbox division was in the black last time I looked.

Unless they really cling to their value add bullshit and refuse to lower the price they will sell more than the 360. Don't think that this is a huge question although the difference won't be huge.

The Wii is a different matter but unless it gets a couple games I want to play this is no big problem. The wii will not take developer support from PCS360. They have their own world.

Is the Wii really eating into the demographic which buy PS3's, is it really?

Are you going to see someone who will buy Killzone 2 sell his PS3 and buy a Wii for The Conduit? The 360 is the PS3's main competition, it is what is taking hardware and software sales from them, not the Wii.

Sony are not going to start saying "yeah so we lost to Nintendo and MS as well" and piss off shareholders, it is not possible to give up and accept 3rd place when you come from 1st place for 10 years.

I always thought Nintendo fanboys were the most pleasant but damn, this site has showed me that is most definitely not the case. :/
