Forums - General Discussion - Israel Declares Cease Fire...Hamas Says it will keep fighting.

JERUSALEM – Prime Minister Ehud Olmert says Israel will unilaterally halt its 22-day offensive against Hamas but keep troops on the ground in Gaza for the time being.

Government leaders voted to stop the assault during an emergency security meeting Saturday. Shortly before the meeting began, Hamas vowed to keep fighting until Israel pulled its forces out of Gaza.

More than 1,100 Palestinians have been killed since the Israeli offensive began on Dec. 27, according to Palestinian and U.N. officials. At least 13 Israelis have also died.

This is a wise strategic move by Israel. Here is an excellent piece from "The China Post" on why Israel is unilaterally halting its offensive.

While that's a very good article, there is another point I would put forth.

Obama takes office in 4 days. Israel doesn't want to start the US Presidency on a potential bad foot.

no, it wasn't.

Israel is not any safer now that it was a few weeks ago. Only thing that has changed is the dead count.

alot? try 80-90%.

UN tallies count all males of fighting age to be combatants. That's stupid.

where are the defenders?
22 days of killing and nothing has been accomplished

It's good that the troops stay. Should rocket fire resume, the operation will also resume.

And if you ask "what has been ahieved", then I can tell you a lot of the Hamas brass has been wiped out. They'll act a lot more unorganized now. Plus, they'll think thrice before trying to smuggle any weapons again.
