Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Final Fantasy IV Scan

I well understand the argument as to why the remade Final Fantasy characters seem so much more... feminine, I guess. I don't recall coming across the Final Fantasy IV concept artwork back in the day, but it was included in the "official strategy guide" or whatever for Final Fantasy VI. I thought it was bizarre back then, and it still seems strange now.

Put me in agreement with ItsaMii and mrstickball on this one. This is NOT at all how I imagined the characters in Final Fantasy IV looking. I have very fond memories of playing the game when it came out; I think it was in 1992. That's actually one of the great advantages of older games; the sprites weren't all that detailed, so you had to fill in the rest of the details with your imagination. I understand that Amano's vision of these characters doesn't reflect my own. But still... ugh. Next thing you'll tell me that we'll get a different translation, with no "spoony bard" references! :p

... yeah. The 2D looked better IMO... just horrible. I don't care about the "Cecicl is girly looking!" either. It just looks plain... bad.

Edit:  I changed it to a link because the pic was to big for the thread.

I'm sorry... Cecil looks like he's about 12 in that picture. Honestly... this is the lamest thing that Square has ever done. And coming from me, that's really saying something.

0_o This is Cecil? Lol, he looks like a female rock singer from the eighties ^^

Johan Jet reborn!!!!! ^^

That's really not the way I was seeing him while playing the game....

Well, Final Fantasy VI character designs were not exactly super masculine either...

So it's official, VGChartz members wan't super masculine male characters.

Oh, on another note... while in America homophobia is seen as latent homosexuality, in Japan, excessive masculinity is seen as latent homosexuality. If someone is overly masculine, there are high chances for him to be gay. Duke Nukem would be the gay king in Japan, for example

As for the character design, I like it the way it is. I would be more interested in female character design than in male character design anyway.

Even in Japan, men do not look like women, heck even transvestites don't look quite like women so why are certain elements in japanese culture obsessed with this sort of aesthetic. Heck, I agree women are visually more appealing than men but that doesn't mean I'd rather look like a woman lol. BTW I don't see what is so special about Amano's art style, it seems rather crude to me.

Agreed.  If this is the style they were really going for back in the early 90s, and just couldn't pull it off because of graphical limitations, then they've had the wrong guy all along.  No wonder the FF series went south after they got off cartridges -- their wacko creative impulses were no longer held back.

EDIT: Misread your post.

The psychology community in general tends to see homophobia as latent homosexuality so general perception does have some backing. All the testing done on the subject seems to play that out. I know what you're thinking... how does one test for that. Well for men it involves a lot of Gay, Straight and Lesbian porn... and something that measures... well you can imagine. For women it involves less direct means. So men are more often used for the study. End results though... most homophobes appear to be attracted to well, other men.

These guys often try to be the manliest men they can be so they don't have to deal with the shame they feel from these thoughts... so you could see how the japanese might come to that opinion.

I'll take Amano's art style over the generic cookie cutter copy-and-paste art style used in FFX through FFXII, Tidus and Yuna are the main characters in every game, just given different names, hair color and clothes. And the worlds are all the same super glam post modern fantasy lands, there is no variety.
