Forums - Gaming Discussion - What is a hardcore gamer?

We'll have to continue to disagree then. I like fresh new games, ones that aren't the same thing over and over again release by release. The vast majority of what's come out is a lot like everything else. That's understandable, the companies know the formula and there are enough people to buy them. That doesn't mean I like the tactic. Sure, some games like RPGs are great regardless of play mechanics (the story is rightfully central to these games). I worry that companies are too afraid to create games that do not follow established formulas. I liked Katamari Damacy, still have it. I've played most of the DDR series for the extra music. I even enjoy a well done formulaic game. I do have a PS2, had a PS1, and still own a few other consoles. I've seen plenty of games, but the majority of titles that have been produced in the past two generations make me think that there's a record skipping somewhere in the game studios. That record needs to be put back on track.

staticneuron - You have a Wii. Have you noticed how in-sensitive/sensitive the acceleromoter is? Wii sports is what I am biasing it is BAD from. If I was to use Rayman, Wario, or redsteel. I would say other than detecting motion. It's completely useless. Wii Sports - baseball - Is a prime example. it's like it has 3 levels of motion detection. And yet, all 3 of them are so close together, it is EXTREMELY hard to hit the mid level. Wii Tennis is a great example. In fact. it is a horrible example. It's like it detects motion... not how much. Basically what I am saying is... for 'depth' and 'complexity' you might as well be pressing a pressure sensitive button. I'm not complaing about Wii Sports. It's not meant to be complex. But my point is, the accelerometer lacks the sensitivity required to use it in a complex application. Baseball is a great example. Pitching is the BEST example. Flick your wrist slighly... the ball goes 96mph. Flick your wrist as hard as you can... the ball goes 96mph. Barely flick your wrist. the ball dont throw. Try agian. it dont go. Try agian. it goes 64. Try agian, it goes 96. Try agian. It goes 77. It's hard to get it between the top and bottom. I typically just used curve ball/sinker and stuff to adjust my speed, because I couldn't get NEAR the sensitivity I wanted on the accelerometer. The PS3 has the same problem with it's accelerometer. I'm not bashing the Wii. I am stateing a flaw with current gen Accelerometers. They suck. I dont see it being used in 'advanced' ways very well. Other than it being used as a 'physical' button. Because that's how it felt in zelda. (actually that pissed me off, because I hated havening to twitch my hand to swing the sword... and it made no difference which way I did it. I love the sensor that detects how your holding the controller. However the PS3 has that too. My main point here is. The accelerometer sucks. It's like a button. It does not feel near as good as I would like. Crap. I have a 1handed joystick that has more buttons and adjusters than the Wii. (it's what I use to play X3. X3 could not be played on the Wii. (graphically and controller, it would have to use the classic) I like the potential for the pointer/rotational detetion. But Every game I've bought for the Wii felt like a 20-30$ game. Not a 50$ game. I am gonna stop buying them untill I find them for 20-25$. (or rent) Only Wii games that seem worth 50$ are. Zelda, Metroid Prime, Mario, Animal Crossing. (among a few others) I'm gonna stick with buying my 60$ PS3 games.

I believe it's an indication that there are many different types of gamers, that's all. You might be surprised to find that women are a much larger portion of the gaming market than most people are aware for example. They're generally not buying the same games that you are of course. Check out sales of games like Bejeweled or The Sims. I also know people, men and women, who get more excited over card/casino titles than anything else. Some titles that some of us wouldn't even consider games sell very well. How about Deer Hunter? Worst... Game... Ever... But that's only my opinion. A number of people out there actually seem to like tracking deer feces, as several of them were produced. Surely there's a lively hard core gamer market, but there are a large number of people who don't care for these types of games. The Wii seems to have a good chance to get these people into consoles, and as a parallel market it shouldn't really affect hard core game types at all. It even caters to retro gamers such as myself through the virtual console. I don't see why everyone can't be happy with their choice(s) and leave it at that.

I'm just defending my reason the acceleromoter sucks. I think the wii is fun for alot of people. But dont even try to defend the acceleromoter. It's usefulness needs to work around it's massive list of problems. (Wii Sports, being the only one to do that very well I think)

Good for you, and let me be the first to say that you shouldn't. I won't buy games that I don't like either. I happen to enjoy the way Wii Sports controls, but you really shouldn't buy a game unless you like it. You're only contributing to the creation of games that you don't want to see. I purchase games the same way. I'm not going to buy the new Sonic and the Secret Rings game; I rented it and don't care for the voiceovers at all, nor the complex way jumping is handled. Others will probably feel differently, and it's not a terrible game, but aside from the lateral controls it's not the simple to control yet deep gameplay that I think a sonic title should be. A controller bristling with buttons wouldn't work any better, mind you; it could be done with the remote. The method of control just needed more work. That's my opinion of course. I am quite happy with the games I purchased. As for the accelerometer, I would say that the boxing game in Wii Sports was probably the only bad use of the accelerometer in the collection. I'm willing to bet that it can be done much better as developers learn how to use it properly, much like the Cell in the PS3. In the baseball game for example, I've generally found that people who are good at baseball in real life will be good at the Wii Sports version. It's uncanny, I suck at baseball in and out of the game. Friends who are good at baseball in the real world seem to transfer their skills with ease. I consider Tennis and Bowling to be the most accessible games, regardless of who is good or bad at the original, but even so Tennis players and bowlers seem to be able to take advantage of basic principles of the game to their advantage.

And there you go again.

I'm so confused on why people bash the Wiimote so much. It works fine for me. Sometimes my cursor goes a bit wacky, but most of the time it's fine, and I've had hardly any problems with the motion control. It's a fresh, fun way to play, and as a gamer that's played tons of different consoles and games, this system definitely shines as a new, fresh experience. I consider myself a "hardcore gamer" or at least an avid one. I play lots of PC games, and I've played plenty of console games, of many varieties including FPS, RTS, adventures, racing, you name it. I could get a PS3, I'd like to if I had the money...but I have so much fun on the Wii...I could care less right now. So that's that. EDIT: And stop trying to push the "Nintendo's not being innovative" stuff, because even if motion technology is not new, it certainly is a fun console with different controls. I honestly don't think all consoles should have standard gamepads forever. It's good to stick out.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Well I have to disagree with you on that. It is a hardware limitation. the meter goes from 1-100. That is all the sensor detects. Obviously 100 is not very diffrent from 1. That is the problem with the sensor. It is as simple as 1-100. There is no real way to "optimize" for it. It's like the pressure sensitive buttons on the PS2. They are very hard to get anywhere but 0 or 100. It can be done, but it is horrible. That is why you so rarely see it EVER used. I think the acceleromoter on the PS3/Wii going the same way as a on/off switch.
