Forums - Gaming Discussion - 1up might be going under...

I'll be very upset. Best gaming site hands down.

The magazine can disappear I wouldn't care too much for that as much as the site and network.

But what makes you think 1UP is going to disappear? This news has been going on for months that Ziff Davis is going to sell 1up and so it wouldn't go down even if they went bankrupt.

Also your assertion that this has something to do with 'issues' with Wii reviews (issues in the heads of Nintendo fanboys only) is ludicrous.

I can't believe how quickly Nintendo fans suddenly became the most arrogant people on the planet... you know not everything revolves around the Wii and DS on this planet.

I hear Amped Mobile is going out of business cause they didn't embrace the Wii!

I don't think it has to do with arrogance so much as the word irony losing all real meaning since the alanis morisette song.  He thought it was ironic because everyone was ust talking about 1up and this article came out.  When just like rain on your wedding day it's simply just coincidental.

It's nice to have a mod who's hostile to a big segment of the market and the once and future king of modern videogames. It certainly helps give the site a neutral air that its figures dictate.

An old Arabian proverb: Whenever you point at someone, three fingers are pointing back at you. Any accusation of "fanboy" should be seen in this light.

The Ziff Davis group has been in financial trouble for a good while now.

That's why they are closing magazines and such and there were negotiations to sell 1up.com network to dell for a while.

I just hope it survives with the same people involved because it is the most entertaining game sites (best podcasts and video podcasts about games) and they have great features, reviews, previews and so on.

Unlike some people I don't go around screaming bias when a PS3 game gets rated low or something...

The data does seem to indicate a significant bias as far as 1up is concerned.

The average Wii score is -9.7% lower then the average Wii scores given to the rest of the review community has given them.  In other words a wii game on average will get an entire point out of 10 less then it should get statistically speaking.  So a game that deserves a 7 would get a 6.

This in itself would not show bias since it may just be a tougher ranking review site HOWEVER PS3 games are ranked about 4% lower then average giving them only about a half of point of difference on the PS3 while the 360 only gets ranked about 3.6% below average.

Just eyeballing it the Wii numbers would definitly fall into the level of statistical signficance if run through a stats program.  Further statsitcal studies would have to be run however with the reviews put into the database along with their gametype, developer and overall average score however to see what the bias is.

If there are no further bias shown it could be a Wii bias.  However it could be equally as likely 1Up has a bias for or against a particular developer.  Or they have bias positive or negative for a certain style of game.  For example they could rate extremly hard on games except for FPS which could be ranked on average.  The lack of FPS for Wii compared to PS3 and Xbox 360 could be the source of the bias.  Or it could just be that they are extra harsh on mediocre or bad games and the Wii has just had more bad or mediocre games in comparison to the 360 and PS3. (By this i mean they give games that deserve a 5 or 6, a 3 or 4.)   Or they could just be harder on good games and the Wii could have had more "Higher" ranked games overall.  Or most other review sites could be ranking the Wii games on a scale with other wii games while 1up compares them to PS3 and 360 which might knock off points.  Or most reviewing sites could be comparing the Wii graphics to 360 and PS3 but graphics hold more weight in 1ups case.

Or it could be a mix of those factors all rolled up into one.

There definitly is bias there is pretty much no debate statistically, and that there is a statistical bias against the wii currently, however without further statistical analysis it would be an unfounded guess to say the reason why is because they are actually biast against the Wii.

That would invovle a fairly simple proceude but it would take a lot of Data Entry which I'm to lazy to do without pay or school credit and besides which I don't have the proper software.  Well not that could hold more then 50 entries.  Which all the reviews they have had for the three systems would be well over that.

I am not even talking about there Anti-Nintendo bias, I don't read either one because it is filled (mostly) with old news and incredibly irrelavant chatter.

One example: Give Boogie a bad review, fine. The justification however, basically said: Writing reviews is hard and that's my opinion. Well justify your opinion, if you are going to continue the arguement. Explain it to me. If they are going to review ANY game below 5, I want details. Same if they review anything over 7.7. Below five (below average) to me says: Do not buy, no matter what. That is a D or an F, and isn't worth looking at.... well tell me why you think that, in detail. 7.7 or great is B or A work, and I take that as a recommendation to buy. Again, why?

It is unfair to developers, publisher and consumers to rate any game outside of average with out going into detail. How are the developers going to make it better with out well expressed input, or how can consumers make well informed buying decisions?

1up reviews are good length but lack depth. EGM reviews are too short, 3 reviewers writing a couple paragraghs each, usually.

There is too much focus on what is coming, not enough on what is here, now. (true of most game sites and mags though). I know that the most vocal hardcore gamers crave this stuff, but the more casual gamers who constitute the bulk of the market, I believe, shy away from anticipation on most titles. (I mean Madden/Halo/GTA casual, not Brain Age casual)

Too many games are hyped like the next big thing, then it comes get a moderate review and never gets talked about again. It's an insane way to run a publication. I know they are almost all run like that, but 1up (to me, IMO) is one of the worst.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

I like the 1up shows, but I agree generally speaking they seem to be pretty biased (like most US media) to the advantage of the XBox 360.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

PS3 vs 360 sales

1up and EGM can both go away as far as I'm concerned. I used to get EGM but stopped when the editors were dancing on Nintendo's presumed grave back in 2004 (because you know the DS was a kiddie gimmick that would be crushed by Sony's gift to handhelds ending Nintendo). Their insistence that the Revolution would likewise be crushed just showed me how out of tune with the gaming world they've become. 1up is well, no better.

However, after reading Gamepro's joke of a "review" for Madden 08 on the Wii I have discovered there are worse sites out there than 1up.

Don't use either, so don't really care what happens there

Only 1up thing I read is the retro roundup. Gives me a nice summary of the virtual console being released.

To cash in my CC rewards points for $300 in Circuit City gift cards to purchase a 360 or not: That is the question.

1up Yes I would be upset it's one of the best sites. EGM no. I had a three year subscription to that mag and in that time it went from one of the best and most fun Magazines on the market to the worst most lifeless magazine on the market, (Think E3 past shows compared to E3 2007 show and you got the right idea.)

Boycotting the following:

1. Yoshi: He ate my car and spit out a toaster.

2. Igglybuff: Totally false advertisement. You can have as many as you like they don't buff nothing.

3. the Terms Hardcore/Softcore... We're talking Video Games. Not Porn.

4. The term Casual as relates to Gamers: We make them sound like outsider's that happen to play games.  If that were the case they'd own a PS3.

5. Donuts.... Beacause I drink Beer...... and the biggest fan of Donuts hates Beer.

6. Boycotts: Their so lame.
