That's why they are closing magazines and such and there were negotiations to sell 1up.com network to dell for a while.
I just hope it survives with the same people involved because it is the most entertaining game sites (best podcasts and video podcasts about games) and they have great features, reviews, previews and so on.
Unlike some people I don't go around screaming bias when a PS3 game gets rated low or something... |
The data does seem to indicate a significant bias as far as 1up is concerned.
The average Wii score is -9.7% lower then the average Wii scores given to the rest of the review community has given them. In other words a wii game on average will get an entire point out of 10 less then it should get statistically speaking. So a game that deserves a 7 would get a 6.
This in itself would not show bias since it may just be a tougher ranking review site HOWEVER PS3 games are ranked about 4% lower then average giving them only about a half of point of difference on the PS3 while the 360 only gets ranked about 3.6% below average.
Just eyeballing it the Wii numbers would definitly fall into the level of statistical signficance if run through a stats program. Further statsitcal studies would have to be run however with the reviews put into the database along with their gametype, developer and overall average score however to see what the bias is.
If there are no further bias shown it could be a Wii bias. However it could be equally as likely 1Up has a bias for or against a particular developer. Or they have bias positive or negative for a certain style of game. For example they could rate extremly hard on games except for FPS which could be ranked on average. The lack of FPS for Wii compared to PS3 and Xbox 360 could be the source of the bias. Or it could just be that they are extra harsh on mediocre or bad games and the Wii has just had more bad or mediocre games in comparison to the 360 and PS3. (By this i mean they give games that deserve a 5 or 6, a 3 or 4.) Or they could just be harder on good games and the Wii could have had more "Higher" ranked games overall. Or most other review sites could be ranking the Wii games on a scale with other wii games while 1up compares them to PS3 and 360 which might knock off points. Or most reviewing sites could be comparing the Wii graphics to 360 and PS3 but graphics hold more weight in 1ups case.
Or it could be a mix of those factors all rolled up into one.
There definitly is bias there is pretty much no debate statistically, and that there is a statistical bias against the wii currently, however without further statistical analysis it would be an unfounded guess to say the reason why is because they are actually biast against the Wii.
That would invovle a fairly simple proceude but it would take a lot of Data Entry which I'm to lazy to do without pay or school credit and besides which I don't have the proper software. Well not that could hold more then 50 entries. Which all the reviews they have had for the three systems would be well over that.
