Rumor: 'Major' online Wii game ditching Friend Codes

Slipped in among the various topics covered in IGN's latest Nintendo Voice Chat podcast was an interesting little rumor: a "major online title" coming to Wii in 2009 won't require Friend Codes. How? Evidently the developer simply realized it could pull it off -- and, like most gamers, doesn't care for the restrictive system.

Speculation as to what game IGN was referencing (which, according to the site, has already been announced) quickly brought up The Conduit, the upcoming FPS from High Voltage Software and Sega. Joystiq has confirmed via a source familiar with the title's development that it does, in fact, utilize the Friend Code system, and isn't the game in question. So, what is it then? Let the speculation commence.

I want to know what they want with a unique code for each Wii system... Only Miis for trade and messages?

Seriously, FCs should be banned, and that number should be used.

I think is The Conduit but only imagine a Pokemon MMO with it I can say goodbye to my life.

I don't bother because I don't like to play with friends online. I like to play against random people. So for me, having FC or not it's the same...

My guess is its UBI's upcoming Wii Pervertz title.

I don't mind friend codes, MK's online is brilliant, because you can race against randoms, and you can find your friends if you want.

What is annoying is that you get a new code for each game, but surely FC's are better than the 360's way of doing it, where you are surrounded by 14 year old telling you about their sexual history with your mother

monster hunter 3 tri, could be it.

I never got friends codes, its like letting your teenage son know theres porn under your bed .... and not locking your door .. but the door is shut.

Either Nintendo is for or against online. Friends codes don't help or hinder perverts online ... which might I add is grossly over stereotyped.

"Pier was a chef, a gifted and respected chef who made millions selling his dishes to the residents of New York City and Boston, he even had a famous jingle playing in those cities that everyone knew by heart. He also had a restaurant in Los Angeles, but not expecting LA to have such a massive population he only used his name on that restaurant and left it to his least capable and cheapest chefs. While his New York restaurant sold kobe beef for $100 and his Boston restaurant sold lobster for $50, his LA restaurant sold cheap hotdogs for $30. Initially these hot dogs sold fairly well because residents of los angeles were starving for good food and hoped that the famous name would denote a high quality, but most were disappointed with what they ate. Seeing the success of his cheap hot dogs in LA, Pier thought "why bother giving Los Angeles quality meats when I can oversell them on cheap hotdogs forever, and since I don't care about the product anyways, why bother advertising them? So Pier continued to only sell cheap hotdogs in LA and was surprised to see that they no longer sold. Pier's conclusion? Residents of Los Angeles don't like food."
