I'd rather trust a professional critic than thousands of gamers, to be honest, because fans tend to set a game's score offbalance.

See RottenTomatoes vs. IMDB movie scores. I trust RottenTomatoes usually, because it's professional critics' words. IMDB voters are usually big fans and just put "10/10" without thinking.

I'd rather trust a professional critic too, but unfortunately there are no professional critics for video games. Game magazines really scrape the bottom of the barrel in their hiring. I wouldn't trust these guys to review anything more complicated than socks.

I have to ask, what exactly makes a professional critic and why do you feel there are none in videogames? Some magazines have been around for over 25 years (like EGM) and their reviews are very well respected, yet you're putting those people that work there down along with many others because in your opinion they aren't professional critics? Some of these people write for Time, Newsweek, etc and do spots on tv channels such as CNN yet they're not professional in your opinion?

Try reading the Escapist's feature on game reviews from a few months ago. Gaming journalism, even at the magazines that have been around a long time, is grossly unethical and subjective. EGM, which you hold up as a beacon of light, would routinely assign, e.g., sports games to writers who had admitted elsewhere that they hated sports games. Which made it ironic when their editor-in-chief claimed that he knew of at least one major magazine that they would give out high scores in exchange for advertising revenue.

Yes, but the people you quoted were talking about MP3.

ah lol, today isn't my day.  >_>

Why oh why do ppl keep comparing Metroid Prime 3 to Halo 3 and Bioshock?

Im sure all 3 will be great games but i also think they're very different games, therefor i think this thread is a little silly. Gets right on my man boobs it does!

Yeah, I also have mistrust of review sites. Video game reviews have two major problems going for them. The first, is that a lot of reviewers are simply fans. Fans tend to be narrow minded and "fanatical," that severely impairs their judgement. The second problem with video game reviews are that review sites and magazines often times get exclusive interviews, previews, demos and games from game publishers. If a magazine or site is critical of a game, the game's publisher might not be as friendly in the future-- this makes the magazine or site more 'friendlier' in their reviews.

I don't read many reviews or visit many sites but in the olden days, it seemed to me that Next-Generation magazine was pretty critical of every game. Great games, that everyone could agree where "10s" did not get perfect scores in Next-Gen. Very few games got top scores in that magazine.

I also trust Penny-Arcade.com. They seem critical about everything. And the stuff they love, they are also critical about. They love many genres of games and don't appear to fall into any 'fanboy mindsets'. They love Nintendo, MS and Sony. They don't care if its a "kiddie" game. And they don't let nice visuals fool them.

I haven't seen anything from MP3 yet (in terms of a playable demo) but I have played bioshock. It is amazing. MP3 is going to have to bring some serious heat to even match the game's overall appeal. The game, from playing the demo, has it all -- graphics, sound, atmosphere, art direction, innovation in gameplay, on and on.... I'm a single player fiend so the lack of multiplayer means zero to.

That said, I'm hoping MP3 dispenses with the wandering around puzzle nature of the game and brings a fresh approach to the series that is much more linear and FPS oriented and shows 3rd parties how good a FPS can be on the Wii.

good luck with that happening cuz it's not it a back tracking game at heart........ get over it

I'm not sure I understand your comment, but I'll take it as this: good luck MP3 dispenses with the puzzle/explore nature because it is a back-tracking game at heart. Get over it. Is that what you meant? If so, I don't need to "get over it" -- I just won't buy it as it isn't my type of game. Instead, I'll wait on other FPS shooters to come along. It's callled personal choice. Get over it.

If either of you took the time to read any previews on the game, you would have seen that it states that there is a much heavier emphasis on combat this time around. I'm sure there will be puzzles and the whole lot, but the combat is going to be a focal point.

Thanks for stating the obvious, but the previews I *HAVE* read didn't go into a ton of detail about the actual gameplay.  Most of the previews i've read start with someting along the lines of "Although Nintendo is keeping a tight lid on details, we have a few more tidbits about the upcoming game".  Nintendo hasn't exactly been an open book as to how the game will play out and until there is a playable demo or people have copies of the near or final build to play fully, the previews aren't all that informative.  If you are aware of an in-depth preview that details gameplay, please point me to it.

Bioshock > Metroid

The story alone more than seals the deal. From what I've seen of the game (thank you toys-r-us), it blows away almost every game I've ever seen in the storytelling department, not to mention engaging the player.

The details in each area is absoloutly astonishing. But the way the game delves into its own mythology is truely remarkable. Every little thing contributes to a better understanding of Rapture, and it's all linked together. I've never seen attention to detail like this in MP1 & 2, so I don't see how 3 could make such a jump in quality.

Overall, I'm thinking this game will likely be better than System Shock 2. And its a lot more diverse in terms of environments than you would think or the trailers have shown. And I preordered the collectors edition today, fuck yeah.

"Why do they call it the xbox 360? Because when you see it, you'll turn 360 degrees and walk away"

I totally agree with Ishy. Of course Bioshock will get better reviews. Why? Many reviews start to review a game with skeptism from the get-go just because it has Wiimote controls.

Reviewer: "They say it's better than PC controls.. yeah lets see."
"they are actually pretty good but sometimes the boss was very hard because [I suck at games] the controls are not that good."

Reviewer: "Blurry texture!!!! No wayz! Wii sux. 6/10 for gfx"

Overall: 8.0

Ugh. I still have to see ONE good Wii review. Just one...

It is a hardcore game through and through. You will get your ass kicked by bosses. You will be stumped by the sometimes complex, but never overbearing, exploration.
"You'll never want to play any shooter with dual analog sticks ever again - it's THAT good.". - Gametrailers

no game deserves a rating of 10/10 its stupid. Its saying its the perfect game ever made.

Just like guys who rate women 10/10 there is no such thing. Cause if you see enough women you will like different parts of theirs more and you will wish the chick you rated 10/10 had that. So how can she be a 10 anymore?

Same with games. Every Game has elements in it that you love and will wish it was added to this game just to make it that tiny bit better.

I'm sure bio shock will be awesome but once you finshed playing it you will be like great however it could of had this or this done better.. etc...

Well that's not fair...controls are a big aspect of a game, and if they're glitchy or mess up, Wiimote or not, there's no excuse. Metroid better control well, or it should lose points for it.

I think Bioshock will get better reviews because it is genuinely a better game. But I haven't played either yet, so it's just speculation...I'll probably end up liking Metroid more as a fan, but Bioshock is GOOOOOLLLDD.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Why are we comparing the two?
