Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony:PS3 Might Go 3D in 2010

You have to have content to show this off. If your wanting to show this technology off you have to generate images that have two seperate perspectives. You can either go film something like this, if you have ever seen the camera setup for IMAX 3D with the two big cameras on a rod you get an idea of what a pain this is to do, or you can generate it synthetically. Sony though can just have the PS3 output two slightly offset images of the same thing by making slight modifications to their programs -- and they look excellent as they have already done all the work to make a great graphics and artwork for their games.

If you want to test how this works it is easy. Get something with an LCD screen in it, small TV if you have one, and some polaroid sunglasses. Put the glasses on and spin the screen, at some angle the display will vanish. All they are doing is making a screen that does this but at two angles. It is not really a new idea, you have been able to do this at theatres for a long time but as is usual this is about migrating the technology home.

Why are they going backwards?

They were in 4D not long ago weren't they?

Knew it wouldnt have been long before I see a troll comment such as this one.

Considering the fourth d isnt graphial at all. And if you want to be technical no systems are 3d yet considerin they are all played on a flat screen.

This tech is already on the PC

Here's a couple threads on PS3's 3D.

XBox One Preordered - 06/19/2013 @07:57pm

By the way, anybody making a stupid 4D comment, this is 4D. They are reffering to 3 space dimensions. The fourth dimension is time.

Correct, technically every PS3 or 360 game you play on your tv is 2D since it's being played on a flat surface.

Would this technology work with current games and movies, i.e. would my TDK be 3D or would I have to purchase a new disc?

3D glasses = headaches.

Any 3D display technology that involves wearing glasses is bound to fail, just like it has repeatedly failed in theaters for the past 50 years.

@small flying taco^^so what is the point of making PS3 3D when no one can use it in 2010?the link says the future 3D can be used with regular LCD with 120HZ or less freq.

Did the journalist ask what 'regular' was?

EDIT:  Actually I think I may have overlooked one other idea.  That sheet of glass could be most of an LCD display.  You could then just paste it on the front of your current one and change the image, it would be darker as you would now be passing light through a minimum of 3 polarizing filters and 2 crystal sets but I guess that would let you use pretty much any set for this.  It would though be a better quality image and a  cheaper setup if you just had this intergrated into your TV, as with this sort of setup your buying basically two TVs.

I can't believe he actually got banned for this. It's fucking joke, morons.

If you're gonna ban starcraft why not ban Soriku while you're at it?

Wow what a bad ban. I have seen tons of stuff way more offensive than that get through.

Have you been to an Imax 3d movie recently? It is full of win!

While Sony has been making mis step after mis step this gen, I think this is a great idea. Who wouldn't like to see bullets or grenades come flying at them in COD? I have been waiting on something like this for a long long time, lets hope they work it out well.
