I would most certainly pick Mass Effect over Bioshock. While I think Bioshock was an excellent game, Mass Effect was much more engaging in my opinion.

However, Mass Effect isn't much of an FPS. For that matter, I didn't really think Bioshock was that great of an FPS. A great overall game (which is the most important), just not a great FPS.

Mass Effect

Wow..Mass Effect is getting a lot of love on this site I see. That's surprising that so many people would suggest it over one of the highest rated and beloved (i thoght) games of this generation.

I think ME would be lucky to make my top 20 of this gen. Bioshock close to top 5.

I really think Bioshock is slightly over-rated.  I think it's a good polished game, but the overall experience I would probably give a high 8.

I thought engagements with enemies were somewhat bland and I never really felt that "holy crap, I can't believe I got through that" moment that makes your heart really thump.  I thought the respawn points were a horible idea which I believe lead to a loss of those tight situations previously described.  The plasmids were fun, but sometimes it felt like it took too much effort to make use of some of the plasmids.  Of course, the game did have polish!  The way the narrative was delivered fit and the story was engaging.  The atmosphere the game introduced was fantastic.  Oh and the way they made shadows dance around you or appear at times was brilliant.

It's been a while since I played either game, but I remember Mass Effect just being a much more enjoyable game.

If a little more description will help.

In my view, Bioshock is an average FPS with an amazing setting and atmosphere, which translates into an overall spectacular game. It was the visuals, the environment, and background story that made the game for me.

Mass Effect has a more engaging active story. I really enjoyed the world of Mass Effect. The different alien races, the character interactions, the story that affects the entire galaxy and is only the beginning of the story that will be the trilogy. The shooter aspect to it is also kinda average TPS, but I do enjoy the outfitting all the characters and the rpg element of leveling and customizing their stats and choosing what combination makes the best team.  It does have some kinda mundane side quests, but I was happy to do them all, just to be spending more time playing the game.

If you are looking for more play time for your money, Mass Effect certainly will last longer. But again, I highly highly recommend just getting them both.

Well, thanks to everyone, youve all made solid arguments. I think considering my current situation im gonna go with mass effect first, and get bioshock in a few weeks time, cos i really wanna play both.

Thanks a lot guys

I don't think I would want to give you my hand unless I knew what you were going to do with it.

Well it depends what you really prefer, i would personally get mass effect since its an RPG made by one of the best RPG studios out there.
