Forums - Gaming Discussion - Microsoft's Bach's Three Reasons For No Blu-ray On Xbox 360

Microsoft still has no plans to create a Blu-ray add-on for the Xbox 360, says Entertainment & Devices boss Robbie Bach, talking to tech site TechFlash at the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show.

When asked about plans to add Blu-ray tech to the Xbox 360, Bach simply said, "We have no plan to do that." Pressed further on the subject, he said there are "a lot of reasons" for the decision.

"It’s not a feature we get a ton of requests for. We really don’t," said Bach. "When you ask people the list of things they want to see us spending time creating in Xbox, Blu-ray is way, way down on the list."

Speculation that Microsoft would create a Blu-ray add-on disc drive for the Xbox 360, or a model of the console featuring a standard Blu-ray drive, has persisted ever since the collapse of the Microsoft-supported HD-DVD format last year.

"The second thing is, from a technical perspective, it doesn’t help us in the core of what Xbox does, which is in gaming," Bach continued.

"We can’t have publishers produce games on Blu-ray disc. Because then they won’t play on the 28 million Xboxes we’ve already shipped. So it doesn’t help us in the core gaming space."

"The third thing, and this maps to all three of those, is that it costs a lot of money," added Bach. "And so the scenario is, OK, let me get this straight: I’m going to add something to the product that’s going to raise the cost, which means the price goes up, consumers aren’t asking for it, and by the way, my game developers can’t use it."

Bach said that Microsoft's partnership with Netflix and other video on demand initiatives for the Xbox 360 were an existing solution for consumers seeking high-definition video via their consoles.

Well that's as straight up and honest as it gets.

I dont know so much about the first one, a reasonably priced add on would probably please alot of Xbox 360 users. But the second one makes sense, since they have been behind DD for awhile now. And the thrid reason would only make sense if it was integrated and not an add-on. If it did ever get released I'd be willing to bet it would have a higer attach rate than the HD-DVD drive they did, cause I'm sure there are plenty of Xbox 360 users are looking for a nice cheap Blu-Ray player and an add on would be perfect for some of them.

Not many responses here. Is it because there is nothing arguable in his comments?

I say there aren't any. He didn't down Blu Ray, just answered the question honestly with no swipes. Good stuff to me.

An add-on a'la HD DVD would be easy, but really if MS support BR they will hasten its adoption, something they clearly don't want to do, and they also risk making PS3 seem more attractive as new purchasers might well compare 360 & BR add-on to PS3 and figure why have it external?

I'm sure it would sell very well to existing 360 owners, but I really doubt MS would want to risk the potential negatives with regard to getting more new 360 owners and pushing DD over physical media for existing owners.

If 360 was way, way ahead and PS3 truly dead then MS would probably push out a BR external drive, but I'd be hugely surprised if they did so in the current competitive market.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

If BluRay really pulls up before next gen, they will include it (in the next box, that is) since living room presence is important.

But it's too early and his reasons for not making one for the 360 are perfectly sound and logical.

Im sure they were planning on a bluray add on.

Obviously not...

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

Blu-ray players are pretty cheap now, wouldn't make any sense to release one. It would also give PS3 people more reasons why a PS3 is really cheaper than a 360.

He gave a straight forward and honest answer so yeah, not too much to comment on.  This is what happens when someone says something that isn't full of spin.

Onyxmeth and Twestern - How so?

"The second thing is, from a technical perspective, it doesn’t help us in the core of what Xbox does, which is in gaming," Bach continued.

That's straight forward and honest? Does this dude not remember that there was an HD DVD add on for the 360? What, the console is suddenly only for gaming? Point three is the only one that actually sounds truthful.

Re-iterating point three: We backed the wrong damn video format and now it costs too much to invest in Blu Ray and pay the people we shunned till a few months ago.
