Forums - Gaming Discussion - Square Enix Head: A "Very Bountiful" 2009, we need games that sell 2-3 mil

Hmm... can't just sell 200,000 to 800,000 copies anymore...

wonder why?

HD graphics anyone?

HD Graphics are so overrated.

I feel like the quality of games were so much better when all this extreme praise of graphics did not exist.

TLR/IU sold well?

Hmm...

Either of them sell 2-3 million?

Or did they sell 200 000 - 800 000?

If the former, I take my comment back

If the latter, my comment is correct

I think DMJ was questioning the article for saying that both titles performed well.

Yeah, they're selling well for new JRPG ips. Go check TLR, this week at more than half a mil. The only people who consider that a flop are desperate fanboys. SE recognizes it, you can't?

This is actually what i feel about SE game especially the FF series.  The graphic and complexity in the main FF series has gotten even more amazing, but the qaulity of the story to me has gotten worse and kind of dull.  Thats why i havnt even purchased a FF series since FF 8.

I TAKE NO SIDES

square enix's 360 exclusives didnt sell very well in 08, remember when they stated their sales were down 70%? they need to rethink their strategy in 09, whatever it maybe- even if they have to keep most of their games on psp and DS.

Oh yeah... reading = good

This is gonna sound a little trollish, but I feel it is what the thread is talking about, so I am sorry if anyone is offended.

SE is so stupid for selling out to Microsoft for all of those games. Microsoft should be ashamed to steal those games, not for personal financial gain or establishment of the 360 in Japan, (because that is impossible)

but instead to prevent the PS3 from having a single JRPG, because Microsoft knows that if Sony were to share these games with the 360, then they would have sold 4 or 5 times the amount they did.

I understand how business works, but this type of hardball from Microsoft, and Selling out from SE is really hard to stomach for me.

Microsoft essentially bought the "failure" of Square Enix's '08 releases.

And that IS why their 2008 was not as great as it could have been.

Think about it; arguably the largest Japanese developer releasing their entire 08 lineup for an American console which barely sells units or moves software for long periods of time in Japan?

- That is idiocy, no matter how you look at it.

I just wonder how big the exclusivity buyouts must have been.

Well they consider there 360 RPGS successes.  So if one were to think money exchanged hands... you would think enough to make it profitable, no?

To me it kinda seems like SE is saying... If it's not marketed to be a blockbuster... don't expect an HD RPG unless we're getting paid.  I mean he's not saying they sold bad... he's just saying 200,000-800,000 sales just don't work anymore sales wise.

Since unless they sell huge amounts they aren't going to see a profit.  If anything, SE selling the RPGs probably worked out for them.  Japanese gamers... no.  SE though... seems like it.

So... FF13, FFV13... and... what other big unanounced blockbusters do they have KH3... even that probably didn't sell enough to qualify in the next generation? (shrunken userbase vs PS2.)

Will square try and make a new IP blockbuster for the HD consoles?
