Forums - Gaming Discussion - Have Western RPGs supplanted JRPGs?

The problem with Jrpgs is that most of them seem plagued with a "Jar Jar Binks" quality side kick and targeted twoards teenagers.

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

JRPG are mostly for young gamers (below 15) while WRPG are for serious, mature gamers.

WRPGs have far better story telling, have more advanced features, are bigger and usually have better graphics.

The only good "JRPG" in my opinion is Zelda series, because it doesn't try to be RPG, it's just a fantastic action adventure.

Are you serious? You got that completely reversed. JRPG's are usually alot more complex. It's been a while since I've played a WRPG that required a decent amount of thinking. There's a reason why braindead shooters are so popular in America.

As for JRPG's, I honestly haven't been able to get into them, not sure why. They usually just don't catch my interest. It's probably the fact that they just don't seem to stand out very much - there's not very many high rated JRPG's out there....on PS3 at least....it's the only console I play. The latest FF does look good though, I love the visuals. I'll most likely be getting WKC when it's out....not sure if that'd be considered a JRPG.

I would've bought Valkria Chronicles if it had multiplayer - I still think leaving it out was a waste of so much potential.

How did I miss that post? WRPG are far easier to play! Most young gamers would rather Mass Effect before any FF.

maybe you should try some real WRPGs like sipiderweb's games befor you judge them to harshly just becaus modern style WRPG like Mass Effect are si-fi (nothing wrong with that I love me some good si-fi) and aimed at a more casual crowd (broader audience) and most games these days are easyer than the games of yester year so more people can enjoy them and as far as I know FF games arn't that hard if you are willing to put in some grinding time, that goes for most RPGs but Geneforge my favorit spiderweb series  you can't do much grinding.

Check out my hype threads: Cyberpunk, and The Witcher 3!

JRPGs do not kill themselves through their game mechanics but through their weird story lines. FAR TOO JAPANESE. I like the story telling approach, the turn based fighting mechanic was used by western RPGs before JRPGS even existed (I think), Wizardry, Might&Magic ...

But the stories with their androgynous 15 year old heroes in these totally arbitrary fantasy worlds, simply not fun.

In general WRPG's are far far better on the pc then on consoles. Whilst things like mass effect are great they still don't come close to games like baldurs gate, ultima, planescape, fallout (the originals), anachronox and arcanum. Yes I'm listing some pretty old games but I haven't played many pc games for a few years so I have little idea about modern pc rpg's.

Btw, Elona is some sort of fusion of JRPG and (old)WRPG.

well, that's part of my problem with Mass Effect and Fallout 3. Anyway, it's just a matter of genre definition, but I find it difficult even to compare them to other "WRPGs". I think ME and FO3 rely too much on direct action and player skills, rather than the character skills. I guess that's what makes them so different and, of course, appeal to a broader audience. and that's definitely not a direction I want JRPGs to take.

the words above were backed by NUCLEAR WEAPONS!

Can't get involved in this.... I can't get involved in this.

So much potential for violence, for vitriol, all in one topic...!

The answer, though, is "no". Marketshare hasn't changed. Mindshare has, though, with the shift of the PC RPG player demographic to the HD systems. If not the players,s then at least the developers.
