Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Just talking to a guy about to buy a console ...

And he was positive he'd buy a PS3 for the gaming, Blu Ray and the like. His wife, however, wasn't big on the HD consoles and is a nongamer and wanted a Wii. However, after the holidays, she played 'Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe' and said yes to ... an Xbox 360. He said he was cool with the idea, but also stated something me and other video game bloggers at the paper were discussing - all of his friends he would game with have 360s. And another PS2 owner is going to get a 360 - and stated the number of co-workers with 360s and on LIVE was a factor for him too.

Another friend and fellow blogger who has a 360 and PS3 was saying he wants to get COD4 - he passed on it, now wants it - and couldn't believe how cheap the PS3 version is - vs. the 360 version, which is still  pretty much at full retail. He said the same thing - you could game online - for free - with the PS3 version, but it's only good if your peeps have PS3s.

I definitely agree - the friend factor is really swaying potential PS3 sales - especially PS2 owners who don't have a carrot from Sony - to look at the 360 this time around.

Any similar experiences out there?

I have friends on PS3 and Friends on 360, and it doesn't weigh on my decision for Multi-plat games.

You make friends online, and there are plenty of offline games that each console has that can sway the decision for the console. Like, if you like Uncharted, it doesn't matter what friends you want to play with since it's single-player. Same with Tales of Vesperia or any other single-player game.

A non-factor in PS2 - PS3 or PS2 - 360 owners.

It's just preference.

Another satisfied XBox 360 owner. 360 is half the price of PS3 which offers basically the same experience as PS3. 90% of the games on XBox 360 are on PS3 and the XBox 360 has some great console exclusives of its own.

Yep. A friend of mine went out and bought a 360 immediately after seeing how much better CoD4 played online on the 360. Another friend of mine bought a 360 a while ago, and he was hardcore PS3 lover. He bought it because most of his friends had a 360, and he wanted to play the games like Halo, Gears, Mass Effect, Call of Duty, etc.

I've heard lots of these same arguments around the university and it seems pretty clear that in the US especially, the 360 has the "my friends got one too" card.

I am the only person I know with a PS3 and I know an awful lot of people. The console owners I know are mostly XB and I know a few Wii people.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

Well most of my friends that have PS2's last generation have converted to Wii's and 360's only a handful got the PS3 because of the price and it's offerings not being that much different from 360, and when you're between 18 and 21 this really plays an important role.

Fission mailed.

Solution: buy all your friends PS3s.

I'll agree with this. Most of the people I know have 360's and their friends got them to play together.

Ironically, I got a PS3 anyway and I'm definitely the biggest online gamer out of all my friends :P

Platinums: Red Dead Redemption, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Terminator Salvation, Uncharted 1, inFamous Second Son, Rocket League

i got 3 friends to buy a 360 because of me lol, all used of course (149.99 vs 329.99 for a used ps3 at the local game exchange)
