Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why are Metroid franchise sales so low? How can the franchise grow?

Stop with the empty environments and long areas of jumping around doing nothing. Make it a proper shooting game.

If it was any more like Halo, Gears, Resistance, etc. it would be just as meh and been there done that as the games I just lsited. Metroid truly is an exceptional game and it deserved its spot as 2nd best (after zelda OOT) until overhyped games fucked up the positioning (read: GTAiV's craptastic appearence).

As for how to make it sell well, Metroid is a sisngle-player game, how are you going to ada multi player to it? Deathmatch? Yeah right... The story is just fine, and I even like the silent-treatment. It works in the exact same way that Half-Life works, perfectly. The story itself is fine as it is too, it doesn't get in the way, and it lets the creators come up with some great locales and puzzles. A different story would only get in the way of gameplay and that would be catastrophic. It doesn't need to be a shooter because I have yet to see a GEAT shooter on a console, and it focuses on an area that is rarely tread upon, first-person adventure.

The biggest problem has been already pointed out; its first appearence is that of a shooter, and a hard-core one at that. Mothers won't buy it for their kids, and people who don't know of it just won't buy it because they hear about he "AMAZING HALO, Gears, and Resistance!!111oneeleven!!1" and compare Prime to those weak games.  Nontendo needs to advertise it to everyone and somehow show that Metroid is not like those games at all.

P.S. Prime 1 was the best game last generation and Prime 3 is the best game this generation so far. Perfect in every aspect.

This is a thread on how to make Metroid sell more, not less. Oh and Metroid doesn't deserve to be in the same sentence as Half-Life frankly.

Indeed, they should be under a list of Best Games Ever created under different categories.

Metroid is not and never was a shooter. It happens to involve shooting, but you're missing the point if you think that's what made Metroid successful.

Nintendo should make or support a good FPS on Wii, but they shouldn't morph a great FPA into a mediocre shooter.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

A lot of people are against any type of change to the Metroid formula. I can respect that. But then again, didn't the franchise experience a huge change in 2002? Didn't most of us come to embrace it? Metroid is Tomb Raider in space. Keep that philosophy in mind, while making some decisions that grow the experience and we'll embrace Samus again. I want more people playing this franchise. It really is among gaming's best.

You can't expect every nintendo franchise to pull off a mario, mk or zelda. That's just unrealistic. Metroid sales look good to me.

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

I think there are alot of things that can be done to improve Metroid, it's just that turning it into a FPS would be basically losing one of the few great FPA's out there and gaining an FPS, the second most common genre among big budget games(behind racing games).

I'm all up for change, but a change in the right direction. Making it more of a shooter and slapping MP on it? No thanks, if I wanted such a sub-par experience i'll go play Halo, or COD4, or R2, or Gears, etc. The game is very much about its exploration and puzzles, as long as those are kept and the bad influences are properly disregarded, I'm all up for having it change. I also liked Samus better when she wasn't showing herself so much to the camera....

Metroid is Tomb RAider in sapce?

Metroid was released before Tomb Raider was even thought of, so if anything, Tomb Raider is Metroid in a real world setting.

Change is good, but like people said, change in the right direction. PRime was basically just a 3D Metroid. Nothing really new (execpt the visors), just a new demension and a change in perspective.

Asking how Nintendo can make games like Metroid Prime or Battalion Wars more popular is kind-of like asking how you can make a cross between country music and rap more popular ...
