Forums - Gaming Discussion - Ubisoft Dev: PS3 Can't Handle AI as well as the 360

Hahah...... Reminds me of my friend who kept saying Ninja Gaiden is a crap game(he keeps dying)..... But everytime he comes over, he only plays Ninja Gaiden. Seems like ppl just dun like to admit their own shortfall and prefer to blame it on others.

there is no anger in what I say... it might be harsh but it's facts not anger.....
and high tech doesn't mean good tech.... so that's why they complain... it's basically what they say... yeah it's high tech but a pain in the ass.... emotion engine was the same compare to XB so it wasn't only about high tech but about how easy it is to handle it.... it's like if you put a plane turbine on a car... yeah it's high tech but not really handy to go shopping... (stupid example there, but it's to help picturing the thing)

and I wonder how with all the devs from everywhere complaining about the cell... how can everybody could lie.... you giving the conspiracy theory kind of argument all the time... it's annoying....
there the Cell sucks for DEV and cost too much money to develop on it get use to it... it's a fact... especially with a poor user base..... you can flame me all you want... it won't change that it's what most 3rd party think.... even before the PS3 was out the dev were already saying it.... it's not new....

omg Endimion!!Why can't you understand it's a real conspiracy !!!!

All these prepubescent ps3 fanboys denouncing ubisoft devs as incompetent are correct!! What else would you do with a game library such as the PS3's but constantly surf the internet on the Cell!  They know what their talking about because they spend all night circle jerking each other. They go round and round preaching how the superior Cell will bring them Lord Xanu from planet Xeroz to bring them to Lala land where all PS3 games released are actually good!!!

Everyone else is wrong!! Why can't you understand that!!For the Love of God!!

Someone ban Endimion for being such a tard!

It sure does seem like that sometimes. Not just for PS3 fanboys, but fanboys in general.

Just kiss the tip.

There is a general C compiler for the SPUs, and it has lots of useful specific functions to program efficiently (like performing SIMD operations and shuffling and what not). What the SPUs are especially bad at is traversing dynamically allocated data structures or accessing random places in memory, which can be important for AI.

With clever programming, you can offload some AI tasks to the SPUs, especially if you can batch them efficiently, put them into lists, that sort of thing.

Cool, thanks for the info.

So it should be possible to offload the same AI to the SPUs - just not particularly efficient (which should matter). Even at 10% efficiency, a couple of SPUs should be able to handle all the AI requirements (constant random main memory accesses might kill the data cache though).

Its just a question of difficulty anyway - as it always is (i.e. you can port anything to any device - just a question of results... i.e. Assassins Creed on the DS, but not on the Wii!).

Yeah, it is a question of difficulty.  For example, you could create a data structure with a special memory allocator, and allocate, say, a contiguous 100-200kB or so block of memory to be used just by that data structure.  Then the special allocator uses space from that block when you need to create a new node in your structure.  An SPE could then copy the block into its local store, and traverse it quickly and easily.  It would have a limited use, but there are a lot of structures I could see being used this way, especially in a console environment where memory management is so important already.  Like I said, it's all about clever programming and not being afraid to get your hands dirty.

You can't come up with a good SPE code for everything, but you can come up with a good SPE code for more than just the obvious things.

I hope convictions is good, do not really care about the ai, its been good enough in the last few outings, the control changes in double agent, combined with the complete destruction of the formally amazing co-op levels has made me very unsure of getting the next one. I hope they reintroduce the old co-op so much fun.

as for the AI, MGS is a fair comparison i think, though id like some verifiable in-game footage from some source i trust. Killzone is comparable to halo, but with the hype killzone gets, it had better be the second coming of jeebus. Halo i look at as more of a party game its fun with friends, lots of fun, nothing like a late night of stickies and bash games. so as long as they do not screw up multiplayer it lives up to my expectations for my 60 bucks.

Id like to see then next hitman on the ps3 and 360 to compare AI’s

Mercenaries 2 coming out relatively soon could also be a good test of AI

come play minecraft @  mcg.hansrotech.com

minecraft name: hansrotec

XBL name: Goddog

Blame Sony, they took third party developers for granted with their questionable PS3 hardware decisions and third parties seem to be the ones paying for it with extra development costs and delays as they struggle to develop on the PS3.

HA.

Ubi talking PS3 dev, how would they know anything they suck at it.

Ai is mathematics, it pretty well known thats what Cell excels at. You just got to program it the right way. Those fools should give Insomniacs a call.

Next Splinter Cell is a 360 exclusive, theres no reason why it can be compared to Killzone or MGS4

Going to ignore(?) the rest of these posts, but I don't agree with this.

There is mathematics, and there is mathematics. Operations such as square root (or 1/square root) are expensive, and heavily used in physics.

The AI that I have done in the past only uses "basic" maths (weighted averages and the like), and a lot of comparisons, branching, option evaluation and so on. Small amounts of operations across a large and random data set (rather than intense calculations, possibly on a smaller data set - such as triangle rendering, or skeletal animation/blending).

I don't know exactly what sort of Ai they are talking about - possibly some form of weighted response calculation (i.e. to determine their next decision, maybe path finding, etc..) - but I would definitely prefer to write it on a 360 than a PS3.

As Entroper says - it can be developed (efficiently) for the CELL, but it requires more thought, effort and time. Generally less time worrying about the AI itself, and more about the architecture of the hardware.

(in a way, this defines the approach that MS takes to everything - abstract the hardware away, and worry about the problem at hand. In theory you get lower potential (max) performance, but its a lot easier to write - and takes a lot less time. So you can be left with more time to optimise the algorithms themselves, rather than the architecture code).
