Polite Trolling.

@Sky Render

You've extrapolated a lot from a single twenty-year period.  I'm not sure if you're allowed to do that! :)  You're assuming that future twenty year periods will be the same as the previous twenty years but why should anyone believe that.  Many variables have changed.  If we had multiple twenty-year cycles in the past then your argument would have weight but that's simply not the case.  Also, how do you know that after twenty-year loops there exists the distinct possibility of industry failure.  I believe there's only been one loop and there was no industry failure.  I believe your cycle is 1985 to 2006 and I don't think people were concerned a couple years ago about industry failure.  Some may have been concerned for Nintendo's failure pre-Wii but was anyone thinking the industry would fail in 2006?  If you're thinking that Nintendo revitalized a dying industry in the early 80's that wouldn't help your argument since I don't think anyone was console gaming in the early 60's.  I admit to being a noob and not very smart but I don't follow your logic.  Please help me if I'm missing something.

dunno001 - Thanks for saying that simply stating something doesn't make it true.  If I say, "Not to be mean, but you're quite ugly," to my wife.  That would be still be mean.  Original poster should know this.

Also, should Jordan, Ali, Tiger Woods, Jim Brown, Montana/Rice, the Cowboys, 49ers, Steelers, Yankees, etc. all at their peak be considered the equivalent of referees and not competition simply because nobody could hold a candle to them??

While I agree that SkyRender may be reading too much into the sales data we have, 5 to 15 year cycles are pretty common thoughout the entertainment industry ... The reason behind this is that people get bored with whatever is mainstream after a little while and something has to change or else the industry struggles.

Back in 2004 there were a lot of people who started to talk about how the videogame industry could collapse being that the Japaneese industry stagnated and started to decline, there was signs that the North American and European markets were stagnating, and development costs were expected to rise where the industry needed record sales to survive.

HappySqurriel and Sky Render - I see what you're saying and comparing to the broader entertainment industry makes sense.  I don't fully understand mainstream, though.  I'm assuming the Wii is considered mainstream since it's accepted by a broader audience (and maybe this belongs under a different post) but isn't the Wii the 'different' console.  The other two consoles seem to me like consoles in the past - just better, faster, prettier, etc. (I'm not bagging on them by the way) and the Wii seems like it's not the mainstream console since it was a risk and different from what we knew in the past.

So was the Wii maybe not mainstream when it came out but now it is since it's so widely accepted?  This brings up another argument, though, that typical gamers aren't the ones (I think) that are creating the huge sales for the Wii but atypical gamers (grandparents, females, increased casual gamers-, etc.).  So wouldn't this also make the Wii anti-mainstream since mainstream gamers probably aren't the reason for the Wii's domination in sales.  I realize it probably just boils down to semantics but, basically, is mainstream simply defined as which one has sold more?

Mainstream - Popualar & commonly accepted.

Your pretty much right b-dog77.

wow this thread is so pointless, Megaman2 i thought we can expect more from you.

I heard you out and I'll take you at your word that you are not trolling. That leaves me with the hope that you have a very dry sarcastic wit that is too subtle for me.

If that is not the case and you were perfectly sober and serious; then I have the following  comments, and I ask in turn that you believe me when I say that this is not mean to be insulting or personal.

You should seriously consider getting some professional counseling as your grasp on reality is tenuous enough to be borderline delusional. We are talking about an open commercial marketplace, this is not a ordained religion, or a sovereign state, or a recognized ethnic group, or even a private club that gets to set some standards of admission or juried product selection.  The point of a marketplace is that the customers decide for themselves and the idea that someone is "too successful" is a bizarre criteria indeed.

It is obvious that you have such a distorted view on the correctness and importance of your personal taste and preference or that of your particular demographic group that anyone not catering to you has no rightful place even competing. If that were true, in my case, I would immediately clean out about 90% of the broadcast bandwidth that carries music and especially talk stations that I despise.  Instead someone came up with the idea of preset frequency buttons so that I can instantly tune to those stations I like and completely ignore the rest.

You are of course welcome to not purchase the Wii. You are welcome to ignore it. You can despise it. You can be counted on, I am sure, to never recommend it. But your idea that it should just have the decency to leave because it's embarrassing the competition by vastly outselling them would be quite humorous, except I believe you mean it seriously.

Your concept that it's not a real participant but a distraction from the "real" competition is also ludicrous. Given that your two "real" competitors are functional near clones of each other and brought nothing to the fight but a  higher resolution video image, which has not proven to be the commercial magic that it was supposed to be, hardly disqualifies an alternative, and apparently more successful approach.

Can you really fail to see the arrogant conceit that it doesn't belong there because it doesn't conform to your taste and is "OUTSELLING" them is putting a completely arbitrary egocentric over-evaluation on your viewpoint. The fact that it is selling the most means that there is an even larger segment of humanity that doesn't share your viewpoint and yet you dismiss their taste and selection as meaningless.

This absolute unquestioning belief in the validity of your own particular world view is quite common in young males but be careful. Harmless and even rather amusing in an online debate over the reasonable inconsequential question of who makes the best video GAME (noun - a competitive encounter between individuals or groups carried on for amusement). Its uglier side can show up in everything from date-rape ("I knew she really wanted me") to blowing up innocent strangers because of some difference, real or perceived in ethnicity or religion.

I'm not suggesting that you would suicide bomb Best Buy for moving the Wii rack to the front of the display area but when you feel so qualified to preside over the anointing of true games and dismiss the obvious contrary choice of 40,000,000 other humans as irrelevant, wrong, or obviously ill informed you attitude, if not your actions are just as arrogant and insulting.

10/10

So it has gone from
1. Look at the specs haha lol
2. Its a fad it will stop selling soon
3. It's not in competition with the HD consoles
4. Please leave the marketplace as we want to see the battle of the losers and you are not invited.
Whats next Megaman?

Couldn't you just have whacked him over the head with a baseball bat a few times? That would have been less cruel...
