very simple: People will pay ANY price, just to play FFXIII, MGS4, GT5, FFXIIIv, KZ2, HS, LBP, Uncharted, Lair, 2! Crazzyman post from April 25, 2007 (http://vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=2333). About half these games have since come out, and several were canceled entirely. Needless to say, the mythical sales surge did not happen...

The thread I linked to is actually fun reading. Most of the pro-Sony posters insisted that PS3 sales would take off once the price was cut to $400 and Grand Theft Auto/Metal Gear Solid came out. Those who are clamoring for a $300 pricetag and Killzone/God of War might want to keep that in mind.

It's pretty amazing how the last 21 months haven't impacted him in the least. You have to give him credit for staying on message.

FFXIII, MGS4, GT5, FFXIIIv, KZ2, LBP, GoW3, Ico3, HR, Yakuza 3.

Japan is still to get most Japan oriented games only in 2009.
See BEST sellers on PS3 in Japan: MGS4, DMC4, HSG5, GT5P, Yakuza spin-off VS FFXIII, T6, RE5, SF4, GT5, Yakuza 3 and many other.
I estimate 80%-90% of PS3 titles (based on Japan sales) to have NOT broken even yet.
It`s a matter of PS3 PRICE.
We all know Sony is in a difficult position regarding losing money - and that the PS3 is still being produced at a loss. The chances of Sony further cutting the PS3 price are very, very slim (instead you'll see more complex bundles, at increased prices). And the faster they cut prices, the shorter the effective lifespan of the device on the market.
HOW much Sony is making on PSN/Home? How MUCH Sony gets from BLU-RAY?
The PS3 will be doing REALLY well to sell 2m - which is an *average* of 40k/week.

In '08, the PS3 only broke 40k/week a few times during the entire year (was trying to find out exact numbers, but the site is too slow...). Even the week of 20th Dec didn't break it.

Unless Sony can really pull something amazing out - maybe a slimline PS3, which is a LOT cheaper combined with some killer software - sales for '09 will mirror '08 (if not struggle to match them). If they manage 1.5m in Japan for '09, they are doing well - if they manage 2m, I'll be amazed.
PRICECUT+FFXIII will do wonders for PS3. You may NOT believe.
Without trying to be mean, too many "hardcore" Sony fans like yourself still remind me of the old Sony mentality that got them in this position to start with. Start by looking at reality - real facts, figures, trends, reports... rather than just "hoping" (or even worse - "expecting") things to just magically get better.
Come on, Sony launched PS3 at 600$ price, and sold around 5 mln. at THAT price. Why you believe, people won`t buy PS3 at 299$? PS3 for 2008 behind of x360 maybe by 1-1,5 mln. AND THAT with 200 euros vs 400 euros in Europe. Also 200/300$ vs 400$ in NA.

2009.04.30 - PS3 will OUTSELL x360 atleast by the middle of 2010. Japan+Europe > NA.


Gran Turismo 3 - 1,06 mln. in 3 weeks with around 4 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Gran Turismo 4 - 1,16 mln. with 18 mln. PS2 on the launch.

Final Fantasy X - around 2 mln. with 5 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Final Fantasy X-2 - 2.4 mln. with 12 mln. PS2 on the launch.

 

1.8 mln. PS3 today(2008.01.17) in Japan. Now(2009.04.30) 3.16 mln. PS3 were sold in Japan.
PS3 will reach 4 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 25k.

PS3 may reach 5 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 50k.
PS2 2001 vs PS3 2008 sales numbers =) + New games released in Japan by 2009 that passed 100k so far

HDTV penetration is going up (by 2016 a vast majority of TVs in usage), developers have begun to really tap the PS3's potential. A cheaper slimline with a PS2 emulator, then yes I see no reason why not?

IMO at some point biased US media will have to give in, just like with regard to the real situation in Iraq.

You assume too much in thinking that HDTV penetration = PS3 sales.  Just because an individual has an HDTV does not mean they will get a PS3.

Does Sony have plans on a cheaper slimline PS3 with a PS2 emulator?  Right now I don't have a PS3 as of yet.  I would like one, but there is no reason for me to get one yet.  I already have far too many games sitting on my shelf than I have time to play.  But, if the PS3 got significantly cheaper, and had a PS2 emulator, I'd probably finally get one.  But I don't see that happening for quite a while.  Are there plans for any such thing in the near future that I don't know about?

It's not suprising. What *is* suprising is that Leo-J hasn't joined with them.

No 360 fan would claim such absurd numbers. Only 2 Wii fans would claim absurd numbers....So I guess you have to be around for awhile to have the 'cred' to claim hardware sales that border on the insane.
