I thought the guideline was to give a reasonably detailed description of the linked content, i.e. "don't just post a link!" [edit: I'm right.] |
Yeah, you don't really need to quote anything, but it says to expound on the info a bit, but I think in this case he isn't linking to someone elses article, he is linking to his own so its like an extended post. The only reason I would say to go ahead and add a few quotes is to entice folks to read it, take some of your good quotes and try to grab the reader, I know long posts can be daunting for some but they will usually read it if they spot something interesting.
Anyways, onto my take on it:
I definitely see a reason for Nintendo to try to appeal to the casual gamer, but with a game like metroid people truly just want things added not so much changed. For example, I know there were a few folks on this forum who expressed concern that the 2nd Wii video showed too much action and that with other hunters being mentioned the possibility that the desolate isolation might not be there like before. So in that sense a balance has to be maintained in order to court these casual gamers while keeping the core.
I think a lot of their success is based on their ability to add new content, new upgrades, new enemies, etc..while maintaining the same feeling for the game even when flipping into 3D for the first time. From what I have seen we are going to be getting quite a few toys for samus this time, and the new controls definitely make the series accessible in a way in never was before.
The part about your strategy I completely agreed with was the idea of letting people know that this game is part of a serious franchise with major history in the industry. I do think some people become more intrigued when they hear people talk about an already excellent game series getting a new title with the promise of more ingenuity (in this case the controls). So I think this is the type of strategy that targets both core and casual gamers.
