Forums - Nintendo Discussion - My Metroid Prime Hype Strategy

I made a blog in response to IGN's Blog of the Week feature: blog. It mostly addresses what I think should be done to hype MP3 and whether I think Nintendo has accomplished it or can accomplish it.  I realize this thread isn't very long, but the blog is a solid read. Anyways, your thoughts on mine?

I believe links are supposed to quote the relevant portions onto the page as per forum rules, but I will give it a read anyways, no big deal I guess.

To Each Man, Responsibility

I thought you wrote that very well and had some interesting points.

I agree with you when you said that Nintendo should try to make people realize that Metroid has been around for a long time. That Samus was a mascot along with Mario back in the 80s and still is. It's also great that Nintendo released the preview channel for the game because almost everyone who has a Wii will in some way now know about Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. If this channel is likely to make more gamers prone to buy it is yet to be seen.

If Nintendo wants to make this game a bigger hit than the original, and I don't see why not, they are going to really have to get that hype machine running at full blast. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption has the potential to revolutionalize console shooters, that is something Nintendo should capitalize when they are advertizing the game. Let people know that with this game they are going to get an experience unlike any other. I don't wish for Nintendo to abuse Metroid like Microsoft is doing Halo 3, but I wouldn't mind seeing some extremely cool live-action commercials that make you say, "Man, that's cool. I want that game."

I don't know if Nintendo decided to make this game more approchable to more casual gamers. You pointed out that you think Nintendo should simplify the game concept so that casuals don't deem it "beyond them." I don't agree with that, I think Nintendo made this game for the Hardcore. You also said in the trailers Nintendo should simplify the game image by showing more story and action instead of exploration to make it less intimidating....isn't that lying? The game is going to be a game for gamers who have known about metroid for years. Sure some "moderate gamers' will come along, but the real casuals will be few and far between.

Anyway, that's what I think...I hope it doesn't sound like an incoherent rant. XD Sorry if I sounded harsh.

I thought the guideline was to give a reasonably detailed description of the linked content, i.e. "don't just post a link!"

Metroid.com is updated...

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

I guess I didn't explain the trailer part as clearly as I should. I meant, simplify the game concept in the ad so casual gamers don't immediately reject it. I know that when I've tried to get some of my friends who I'd deem casual to play a game the gives off a hardcore feeling, they immediately reject it because they're not good enough at video games. I think MP3 is one of those games. However, the Wii controls are much more intuitive than casual gamers are likely to realize. Basically, focusing on action and story in trailers is done to get casual gamers to give it a chance. They may well be willing to give it a try if it's pitched like that. If you try to highlight an amazing mood and in depth exploration, things generally associated with hardcore play, casual gamers will instinctively run away. If you argue that the game still has those elements, even if you hide them, I'd counter that these elements aren't much of an actual problem for casual gamers. The mood will be great, no matter what level of gamer you are, and the exploring part of Metroid Prime only requires thinking, nothing more than that required for a puzzle. Basically, while these elements aren't really barriers for casual gamers, casual gamers associate them with fascets of gaming that are, and thus immediately dismiss the game.

@Sqrl: Sorry, I just saw to expound upon the link; I can incorporate parts if you like.

@BenKenobi: You call that an update?  It's pathetic.

They should just put the IGN preview comment: 'Best console FPS since Halo' on the cover.

That'll get the core gamers who bought a Wii to buy it.

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

^^^like he said, i think most core gamers are already aware of, and will buy it :P. Thats a good point, about relating it to other IP's lik Mario etc

The problem with that is that Metroid Prime is about as comparable to Halo as it is to Nascar. It isn't even within a hundred miles of being close to the same kind of gameplay.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

I definately HOPE it's not like Halo O.o!!!

"Go here, kill, go there, kill again, go there kill and find trooper, go there, kill again"... ugh!!!

Metroid is tenfolds better than Halo!!!

On topic: Very interesting blong and you raise some interesting points. Relating it to old IPs [showing the original Metroid in the ads along with the NES and some SMB footage] would be awsome. A genious idea!

It is a hardcore game through and through. You will get your ass kicked by bosses. You will be stumped by the sometimes complex, but never overbearing, exploration.
