It is a drag...installs drive me nuts mainly because they seem so slow - GT5 was ridiculous. Installing a full game on NXE takes no time at all.

But the answer is just to throw a huge HDD in, thats what I did and should mean I never have the dilemma of having to delete an install and then reintstall if I revisit a game.

Same with updates too...I got LBP recently and the updates took so long. Updates on LIVE seem to take a few seconds. I have no idea why the PS3 ones should take so much longer.

Bull crap.

Takes the same amount of time for an NXE isntall as a PS3 install.  MGS4 took me five minutes, my brother install NFS: U on his 360 and it took seven.  It's comprable.

and the LBP update recently took a while because this one was seventy megabytes.  Usually the updates are like 13 megabytes.  Of course it would take longer.

Don't MGS4 installations happen after every act or something like that?

That was truly one of the most hilarious things regarding the PS3/360 tech war. I remember PS3 fanboys mocking a potential MGS4 360 port by saying it would occupy many DVDs, and then it turned out that the PS3 version had mandatory installs which take longer than to switch DVDs would.

it's true that Wii 512MB is low for WiiWare games, but come on, buying a 2Gb SD card is just 10$ on ebay and it's so simple to use, and you will never run out of space

but Ps3 HDD fills up so fast, and upgrading is mush more expensive than buying an SD card and is not as easy as inserting the SD card on Wii!!

Do you see any of the irony in your post ? at all ?

yes, the irony is that that on the Wii 2Gb+512MB are more than enough where 40Gb for Ps3 is not enough!

(because of what the 1st post says, the need to install Ps3 games on HDD)

i mean the Wii may have low space but it's much easier to solve the problem with an SD card than to solve on Ps3 with upgrading hard drives, copying the save files etc and all this stuff

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

Yes it does.

At the end of each act.  It's only about 90 seconds though, but yes, much longer than changing a DVD.

I just read through a few of the posts on a different thread, "What DON'T you like about your console"  and I just have to comment about one regarding the PS3.

It never occured to me that because of the mandatory installs, required because of the slow reading Blu-Ray drive, that eventually the HDD might fill up (depending on how many games, movies, etc...etc.. you have stored) forcing you to ERASE an older game you might not have finished or still like to play if you want to play a game you just bought.

That's absolutely insane.

So... if that scenario actually plays out for a few of you.... instead of just being able to pop in an old game that you enjoy and play it... you have to re-install it on your PS3's HDD first. What an absolutely rediculous format restriction... and yet you guys endlessly stick up for the PS3's amazing capabilities although you can't even enjoy the same basic 'gaming' functionality that the Atari 2600 gave customers back in 1977. 30 years ago.

I know...you can always buy an inexpensive upgrade to the HD, but just the fact that limitation even exists for PS3 owners is crazy to me. ANY GAME SYSTEM SHOULD PLAY THE GAME YOU PUT IN THE DRIVE WITHOUT ANY HEADACHES. PERIOD.

You can put something like 10-11 big game instals on ps3 40 gig drive even asuming bigger than avarege instal sizes.

With current 80 gig system you can have like 20 installed games + bunch of PSN titles do you really need more ?

Then again i couldn't care less as a pc gamer with more than 11 years of experience :D

I KNOW! Like when my PS2 memory card was full up and I wanted to save my new game I had to delete saved data from another game or buy an expensive memory card! Unbelievable, isn't it!

i'm not talking about the limitations of memory cards....I'm talking about the actual system. No other console has ever forced you to sit through....what.... 5-10 minutes of limbo while the game installs onto the HDD. Maybe not a big deal when you first pick it up and start playing through whatever games you have, It just amazes me that at some point, you might have sit through that all over again, for the same game.

That crazy.... and there's absolutely no reason to defend it. If the 360 did that kinda crap, I wouldn't have it. If I put a game in I want to play it, immediately, that's why I put the thing in in the first place. Not to sit there for ten minutes staring off into space, or talking on the phone....or.... you get the point.

That's a pain dude. You shouldn't even bother trying to defend it, cause Sony shoulda come up with a better long term plan than that. Having to completely re-install games I've already played, on the same frieken system... Whatever.

Oh for gods sake if it bother you just swap channel on tv and watch some CNN or MTV in those 5 minutes, read a book or make yourself sandwich ( or post few troll baits on VG chartz using your laptop :D ).

You probably wasted more time on writing and reading this thead than you will waste on reinstalling games again on ps3 :D

No the irony is that you think that you'll never run out of space with a small ass SD card while a harddisk is more likely to run out.

While it's partially true with the tripples mandetory installs they are few and far between. As you could read on the first page someone has 19 games installed and a bunch of other things on his 60 bg and still has 11 gigabytes left. I think you are blowing it way out of proportion. Do you even have a ps3 ? because you don't seem to know what you're talking about.

To defend the Playstation....It's kind of always been that way, given memory card spaces on consoles. If you had too many blocks taken up by saves...You may have to delete old saves due to room (of course, you could always just get a new card too - not an easy option with the PS3 AFIAK).

However, I do agree that, in this day and age, no gamers should choose between saves.

You don't have to choose between saves.

Install and save are 2 different things.

If you have a 40Gb and have played many games what you might have to do is delete an old install and when you want to replay that game you will have to wait for the install to take place again but your save will still be there....

The HDD does not fill that fast, I have a 80Gb, so far I have played around 20 games since I got my PS3 and I have 30 Gb free ( I did delete like 3-4 installs of games I rented and won't ever play again). I have 5 PSN games and WipeoutHD installed on my PS3 too...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Here's my bit on this. I hope it answer you sevengen. I have had a 60 Gig PS3 since the day the console launched. Not once have I had to go and delete a games data yet. All of this and I still enjoy demos and download videos all the time. It's not as big of a deal as you think. Most games have very short install times to add to that.

I hope this somewhat addressed your thread. The only thing I don't understand is why you criticize the people who talk about the PS3's capabilities. The Wii cannot even play DVD movies. The 360's Arcade model comes with a 256 MB memory card which does not even let you play DLC without another purchase. It used to scratch discs and RROD every other day. Yet you say that mandatory installs are a huge enough problem for you to buy the competitions console.
