I was just looking at the weekly hardware sales charts :

... and It was pointed out to me today that the current units sold of PS3s worlwide are about 18.8 million. Xbox360 hit 18.8 million almost exactly six months ago. So I suppose you can say PS3 sales are only 6 months behind the XBox360, however, PS3 came out more then a year after the XBox360 did.

Does this stand to reason that PS3 has closed the gap in the lead XBox had in sales by half since they have been out? Is it also looking like PS3 will overtake the XBox within a year or two at this rate?

PS3 was outselling XBox for a long while until recently, the last few months, which might be attributed to the XBox price drop (The Drive hack probably helped to). I feel XBox will continue to outsell until probably next year when the PS3 will most likely have it's own big price drop, but do you think XBox will drop price again?. Are the prices going to go any lower then $200 for the next gen systems anytime soon? PS2 still sell for over $100

It is all speculation at this point. Sony;s choice to not be competitive this season could cost them the generation. The media is picking up on the falling sales (in comparison) and if things don't change quick Sony may not be able to recover. We all know what happens when the media makes an issue out of something "Economy".

 You can't divide a year into chunks of 6 months because 40% of the sales are concentrated to the 2 months of Nov + Dec.

I can't explain it any better. But no, the PS3 sales are not only 6 months behind the X360, more like 10 months.

ok 10 months isn't bad considering the fact that it came out more than a year after the xbox 360.

in contrast similar boost like 360 got this year ps3 may experience.

a huge price cut in the third year, GT, KZ2, FF13 in japan are big titles.

so match or outsell the 360 , the ps3 would have to keep selling better for at least one year after the 360 stopped selling.

Still don't change the fact that it's 7,5 million consoles behind, no matter how you spin it it's not good.

Hmh.It was released in Europe 3 months later than in Japan/America.
And heck I think most of consoles were sold on release date so I don't have time to think this more..

Yep... Only 6 months behind...

Assuming 360 is about 7,000,000 ahead...

That means every week for 6 months (26 weeks), the PS3 has to outsell the 360 by 270,000 consoles. Every week...

Good luck with that under current economics...
