Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Where are the 1st party Wii casual games?

Final Point -

The market cannot be broken down into two sectors.

HARDCORE | CASUAL

It can on a very broad degree be broken down into three levels

HARDCORE | CASUAL | NON-GAMER

However simply sweeping a company into one heading is just ridiculous.

It is in the best business interest of the company to appeal to as many parts of all segments as possible.

Nintendo simply wants to blur the line between HARDCORE and CASUAL so that they can have games that work between both, the original Super Mario Bros is an excellent example of this kind of game.

The game should be accessible in controls to everyone and then challenge should come from things that you do in the game rather than trying to master the controls.

Umm just because some hardcore gamers enjoy casual games does not make those casual games hardcore.

Grand Theft Auto is casual? Since when?

I think that Zelda is a 'casual' game.  It's why it is stupid to particularly focus on the word 'casual'.

Games that sell over 2 or 3 million worldwide are no longer hardcore becuase they are being accessed by the 'casual'.

I don't think you understand the thought behind the different types of gamers in the market.

GTA is a casual/hardcore game since the PSX era (I am not sure if the series started on PC). A game is not casual or hardcore per se, the gamer who play it is the one who should be labeled casual or hardcore. GTA is a success among kids and teenagers (and adults of course). The difference is that casual players never do anything more in GTA than kill hookers, cops and steal cars. It is the truth, I have heard from several people that GTA have no objeticves (they do not know the purpose of the game is to finish the missions). Those casual GTA players play GTA like they play some sports game, they do not try to complete objectives, they play for fun.

Half the games have been casual so far and you're complaining about lack of casual games?

No. I believe he is responding to arguments from people saying that the Wii is abandoning hardcore gamers by showing that they aren't actually cranking out casual games left and right.

thank you!

nintendo does seriously need to make more "new audience" games. wii sports, wii play and BBA are really basically it. and... i can't imagine the total development time for those game combined being more than 1 year (granted, conception for wii sports probably took a while). among upcoming releases, wii music (if it's coming at all) and wii fit are really the only ones designed completely with that group in mind.

the term "casual" is too broad. it's ambiguous too, as it describes more a tendency rather than preference. anybody can be "casual"; a gamer can play only 1 game the whole a year but the game is god of war, a game all would agree is "hardcore".

let's start using "new audience" or "expanded audience"--it's much closer to what we really mean when we say "casual". BBA would certainly be considered a "casual" game, but a BBA enthusiast could still spend 2 hours a day trying to perfect it, which makes him a "hardcore gamer". using the term "new audience" would eliminate this apparent paradox.

better example: sudoku on the DS would be considered "casual" games. but many sudoku players are totally "hardcore", spending hours and hours, finding all the puzzles they can find. indeed, any sudoku player dedicated enough to purchase a standalone sudoku product is pretty enthusiastic about this activity. again, it's just that this DS game is targeted towards this new/expanded audience, and it's not that this audience is "casual".

as time goes on, the "new" in "new audience" might yet again become ambiguous. we can worry about that when the day comes.

the Wii is an epidemic.

I have a question for everyone: who coined the terms "casual" and "hardcore", or who made them so popular on this generation?

I love how franchises Nintendo has had for a long time are suddenly "casual" games because they are having cross-over success. Are you begrudging of the new games, or of the new gamers? If its the new games, then Pokemon and Mario Party (and later, Animal Crossing) go squarely in the so-called "hardcore" pile.

C'mon. They had Wii Sports at launch, Wii Play and Wario at launch everywhere but America, and the only other post-Iwata franchise game they've brought out since is BBA.

In the meantime they've launched 3 Mario spin-offs, two of them very well received, along with Pokemon. 4 games from the biggest, most traditional franchises they have. What are the big titles for the rest of the year? Mario, Metroid, Smash, Wars, Donkey Kong spin-off, Fire Emblem (all of which rely on NES-era properties) and ONE crossover title in Endless Ocean.

The game release schedule suggests that Nintendo is abandoning the "casuals." One crossover title for the rest of the year? Casual killer app Wii Fit not to make it out of Japan until 2008? Who are they catering to, the fans who got them where they are today with DS and Wii Sports, or the "hardcores" who abandoned them first chance they got on N64 and GC?

See, it's all about perspective. I don't mean "changing your perspective," I mean having some in the first place.

precisely... it's really that nintendo has gotten the perception that they're abandoning the "hardcores". tends to happen when they repeatedly emphasize that they want business from "your mom".

This is the most ignorant generation of gaming to date. Sure, in the past, we had "We do what Nintendont" and "Lol, teh Gaystationz!" but never have I seen such snooty, opinionated gamers.

Seriously, just so much as mention the name of a console and people will chime in with some of the most crazy and vulgar answers.
