Forums - Sales Discussion - Sony still losing £35 on every PS3 sold

so basically what this tells us is sony are right with what they keep saying. they are planning on making profit in 2009 but i still think they should wait until right till the end of the year before cutting the price, because by then it would have been so long since they cut the price that sales would implode and be sky high.

its not the parts really, i think its the importing taxes sony has to pay for to put their consoles on shelfs that totals 35 euros.

don't see why everyone is having a heartattack and saying sony will go out of business because of ps3. won't happen, why. because they sold the ps3 with a lost because they know they will make their money selling games. and home is just adding to that profit because all the ppl buying virtual clothers, advertisements, companies make their own space on home pay sony for it

PS- if you have a problem with home clothes, etc in the mall you have to pay for. you didn't pay for home, sony could have easily charged $60 for it, and i dobut most of ya will ever spend $60 on virtual stuff so quit complaining

The PS3 could have been a fine platform, but Sony had the Betamax complex...

Result : a fat expensive troyan horse that barely fits through the gate

Woah woah woah! That was a bit harsh, come on, the PS3 isnt that fat!

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

yeah, PS3 is not that fat, the TV puts 10 pounds on the PS3, just make sure the PS3 is far from the TV and it should look slimmer.

Right now it seems that they will just have to continue the financial improvement course they're on. Such as Qore, PS Store, Selling items in HOME, advertising in HOME, NO PRICE CUT FOR SOME TIME, and basically just continue to try and sell as much SW as they can. On disc and digital content.

Seem SONY wants to even gamble their hardware brand just to dominate their formats against Toshiba...

The PS3 really needs Blu-Ray for the long run. It's not a SDTV targeted console like the PS2 or Wii.

People aren't well educated with regard to its gaming benefits. Scratch resistance, streaming strengths and most important, enough storage to have top quality graphics and audio without too many sacrifices. Adding playback software for Blu-Ray movies just makes a lot of sense.

The benefits of Blu-Ray are IMO already obvious in exclusives and there's plenty of headroom left for developers to tap into. This while multi-platform games developers and 360 exclusive developers already make sacrifices to still fit on 6.8 GB dual layer 360 DVDs.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune would have been a less impressive game without Blu-Ray, the same for Motorstorm Pacific Rift, the upcoming Killzone 2 would also have become a less impressive game without Blu-Ray, etc. I am happy the PS3 comes with this state of the art technology out of the box.

I love the movie feature, but for games it's IMO equally important.

But are those benefits from Blu ray and high end console like you said are worth the risk for SONY? Anyway, I think SONY applies what the original XBOX applies, in gaming market sense for that matter. bigger, faster, more powerful. A business sense that cost MS 4 billion a year in losses. Im gonna explain it but its too long so im posting my explanation later especially regarding the online and multiplayer but I hope someone can fill upto me.

Sony shouldn't drop the price of PS3 in 2009.
it's still selling ok and i'm sure it'll continue to sell.
they need to start making a profit.

Right now Sony is near breaking even with the system.  If they drop the price another $50 or $100 then they are back to losing.  With all of the billions they have lost already, it would be silly for them to continue on the loss road.  Will Sony go under?  I seriously doubt that would ever happen, however it could seriously be an end to their gaming division.

Sony made several serious mistakes with the PS3,  1) Blu-Ray 2) Cell 3) The complexity of making software for the system overall.   With the system being out a few years, now Blu-Ray is one of its only saving point at this time.  I probably would never have purchased a PS3 without the Blu-ray player.  But it was a catch 22.  Without the Blu-ray player being in it from the start I probably would have owned one launch day, as long as that would have made the system a lot cheaper.

Yeah I do agree with you I think SONY takes a huge gamble with the Blu Ray just to beat Toshiba with the format war. And the PS brand takes the huge sacrifice. Oh well atleast SONY got what they want :/
