Forums - Sony Discussion - Will Killzone 2 suffer as Resistance 2 has? Prediction thread.

Resistance 2's sales, whilst far from poor (nearing one million, will probably pass it by year's end), are nonetheless significantly below where they were generally expected to be given the holiday season, original game's sales and the level of hype surrounding the title.

Killzone 2 has received a similar level of hype to Resistance 2, is exclusive like it's brother, and is regularly being labelled a system seller.  It will not have the benefit of holiday sales to heighten commercial success levels, but it also doesn't have the direct competition of Call of Duty that Resistance faced.  Instead, it goes up against F.E.A.R. 2, a far less commercially successful competitor.

Arguably, Killzone 2 needs to sell far more copies and far more systems than Resistance 2 due to reportedely enormous development budgets and sizeable marketing pushes.

So what do you see Killzone 2 doing first week, after one year, and lifetime?

I have heard some people say one million worldwide week one.

That seems high?

Hmmmm....I think that reviews will playa huge factor in Killzone's fate. If the game is universally acclaimed, I think the two years leading up to it will make it an instant success. At the same time, it might get hazed.

It will not be a huge hit, thats all im saying. Added up, maybe 750,000 first week, 3.5 lifetime

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

Resistance 2 was never a system seller. Sequels (on the same system) never are. So I don't know where that came from. And Resistance 2 came out in a cluttered season. LBP, Gears 2, CoD: WaW, Fallout, and Fable are all games that people have to purchase too, and Resistance 2 had to compete with those games.

And after 6 weeks in America, the first one was at ~300k, and this one is at ~500k. So it's done markedly better in the same time frame. And after 3 weeks in EU, the first one was at 190k, and this one is at 210k. Not a huge raise in sales, but I'd venture to say the game is doing just fine, all things considering.

Now on topic:

I don't think so. Because in February, aside from Halo Wars, it's a pretty clean schedule. I don't think KZ2 will top the NPD top 10 that month since it comes out at the end of the month, but in terms of sales, it will not have much to compete with.

1 million first week? I just don'tk now. I have no clue. Maybe, maybe not. With LBP and Resistance 2, I don't feel comfortable with that statement. But then I look at MGS4 and GTA IV, then I do. I just really don't know. It's in the realm of possibility, but I have no idea.

Actually, it was only PS3 fanboys that expected huge things from R2. The first one sold well for the same reason Red Steel did on the Wii - kinda fun and the first shooter on the console

If KZ2 isn't huge (sales wise) then what will that mean for future third party blockbuster exclusives on the PS3?

KZ2 is first party.

@ DmeisterJ - so you're saying if Killzone 2 bombs, all future first party PS3 games will go multiplat?? :P

I think it all depends on how Sony advertises it and when. Honestly i never saw a Resistance 2 commercial til 2 weeks after the release. If they can advertise it like Gears 2 and Halo 3(I want KZ2 mountain dew and pizza hut!) then im sure sales will at least be better then Resistance 2's sales.

That wouldn't exactly be small.
