Forums - Microsoft Discussion - HDMI Premium is NOT Falcon... It's Zephyr

The details, along with photo evidence, is covered on this Joystiq article:

 http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/10/spot-the-hdmi-enabled-xbox-360-premium-at-retail/

I know there are other threads about HDMI preimums, but all seem to imply the new Premium is the Falcon, it is apparently not.

Still the new Zephyr Premiums are great news, but I'm hoping my current 360 can hang on until the Falcon's hit the street.

That sucks, for everyone.  At least it has a new heat sync, but I have still heard of more than a few problems with the Elite internals.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

MS is getting lazyer by the second.

The original Elites that came out didn't have the new cooling system, later ones do.  That's likely why some people are having problems.

"I have a theory: I'm willing to bet they over manufactured their Elite Mobos. I'm also willing to bet that the 65nm chips are still right around the corner. Therefore, the premiums are now getting the HDMI port to reduce the stock of the overmanufactured elite mobos in preparation for moving the entire line over to the falcon mobo."

it could make sens... they want to clear the zephyr config to move on the falson on all system... that would really be the most cost efficient way of dealling with the PB

Falcon is coming to all versions of the 360 asap

Using M$ instead of MS would have scored you more hate points.  Anyway, the zephyr thing makes sense.  One would think that MS would want to get the falcons on the market ASAP to stop the RROD problem along with the bad media attention.

Agreed....it would make since...but Microsoft has made so many SKU's its not even a joke anymore....

This doesn't really mean the chips aren't 65nm though.

65nm chips could be used in "Zephyr" motherboards as far as I know.

The only way to truly tell if you have 65nm chips right now (if they are even out, which is also unknown) is to crack open the case, pull off the heatsinks, and look at them.

People are just assuming that once they go 65nm they will put "Falcon" in the serial#.

It's a decent assumption, but it's not confirmed or anything. Just one of the possibilities.

MRCUR at Xbox.com that a lot of people are using for a source says lot 0728 and up have 65nm. He didn't say anything about Zephyr vs Falcon at all.

But that doesn't mean lot 0728 might not have Falcon in the serial.

And even then, I think the CPU will go 65nm first and the GPU will wait a bit longer. So there likely will be system with a 65nm CPU and a 90nm GPU. Will those be code named Falcon since they're not fully 65nm?

So much rumors and little hard facts...

Ummm, one flaw is that until recently, Elite's were sold out everywhere. And they're still kind of supply limited. For example, you cant do store pickup on Elites at BestBuy and Circuit City.com. And Gamestop still only sells an Elite bundle on their website I believe (the normal practice with hard to get consoles).

So that doesn't make any sense. There was no "overstock" of Elite motherboards..

It's likely MS will eventually switch to 100% HDMI motherboards anyway, whether they're called Zephyr or something else. It's actually more expensive to produce different motherboard models, it's cheaper to just have one. The sooner MS gets all their products onto HDMI the happier they'll be. That is the transition that is likely happening rigtht now.
