I thought for sure it was going to be Gears of War 2. What does this mean for IGN's overall game of the year?

it means that MGS4 will win overall game of the year

It means that Gears 2 is out of reach to get Overall GOTY. I'm sure the Overall will be done in one of two ways:

1. They use every vote given to every GOTY nominated game across all the platforms to get the Winner and runners-up.

2. They re-vote, which will leave most of the votes exactly the same, but may change for a few editors that may have their real GOTY on a platform they don't write for.

Either way, it's only going to benefit the multiplat games. It may appear that MGS4 will win, because it beat out Fallout 3 on PS3 and Fallout won on 360, so some people's logic will conclude that MGS4 is the front runner, it's probably not. You see Fallout 3 has the highest average of votes on 360. It probably has some votes on PC and PS3 too. The total of those votes should be able to push Fallout 3 over MGS4 once all the voters come back together.

bear in mind that the ps3 version of fallout 3 is not as good as xbox360's graphically. so if mgs4 beaten fallout3 (ps3) it doesnt mean that it will beat fallout3 (360) too

A game that can also be enjoyed by PS3 and PC users. Great game anyway.

Fallout 3 is a great game and is huge. Its something a bit newer than Gears 2. Each to their own though.

Just glad gta4 dint win. this means finally we know this year that something deserved SHOULD win game of year
