Forums - PC Discussion - Blue Screen of Death...help

Ok so for a while now (like 2 weeks) my laptop has been blue screening on me for what seems to be no reason.  One of the messages said IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN, which I looked up and it said that I had bad drivers.  Another time it came up with a different error, but I didn't catch what it said.  Also everytime I restart my laptop AIM starts itself in safe mode and says that there may have been problems with some of the plugin, so maybe that has to do with it? I dunno

Its super annoying and I'm not sure how to fix it.  If anyones got some tips I'll try them.

Sounds like you need to completely wipe your HDD and start from scratch [as in reinstalling the OS again aswell.]

DGC-bad advice for a first step.

OK, BSOD errors are reported in the event log. Right click on "my computer", and select "manage". Expand system tools, event viewer, and select "system". Look for the time of the last BSOD, and there should be an "error" report. This will give you some more details, somtimes what driver it was, if it is a driver. There is also a stop error. You can search the net for that, see if you get anything.

Often BSOD's are caused by bad memory. You can download memtest86, and run a memory scan.

Thanks,

So i found what you were talking about (i think), and there are 13 errors, lots of things terminating unexpectedly.

Clicking on the errors took me here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc756337.aspx

It says I need to change the recovery actions for the service, but to what?

Try to find the error that was reported when you had the bluescreen.
Fixing the SCM will only treat the problem, not solve it. Post a screen capture of your event viewer if you need to.

hrmm . . didn't know you were using Vista. Sorry to here that! Looks like you either have a bad driver, or software trying to install something that is failing. Since you mention AIM, try uninstalling it. If you have installed anything else recently, remove that as well. Better yet, check through the event log for when that error first appeared, then check a few entries before that. Read them all. Installed software usually gets put in the event log, so you can tell what caused the problem. You have to do some sleuthing. You can also search the net for EventID:7031, or any others you get, along with the source. In this case, the Service Control Manager. Chances are, if you have a problem, someone else has had the same one and may have a solution.

lol thanks for the help, I'll do some detective work and see if i can fix it :P

I would recommend two things for you at this point. Post at a dedicated help site like majorgeeks.com or start PMing someone who knows a lot about computers.

The reason I say this is that you will get a lot of varying and confusing advice here from about 20 different people. The first poster saying you need to wipe/reload windows is a good example of that.
