PS3 'Mii' home room and achievements...

Forums - Gaming Discussion - PS3 'Mii' home room and achievements...

Well, it looks like the cat is out of the bag. Kokatu reported this (and has been blackbanned by Sony in response - meaning that it is almost certainly true, and almost certainly their big announcement at GDC). I personally couldn't care less about this - I think its inferior to the Wii's "Mii" system in many ways (the Mii's aren't used in games, don't appear on the consoles, travel between PS3's, etc..). But my opinion doesn't really matter. Curious to know what everyone else thinks. Do you care? Is this "killer" app stuff? http://www.gametab.com/news/831260/

Earlier today we posted a rumor story on the site about a possible announcement of a new technology coming to Sony's Playstation 3. The Playstation Home, we reported, would be an intriguing blending of the Mii and achievements, allowing gamers to create a virtual world for customized avatars and then decorate that space with items unlocked through game play.
Follow the links, and see what you think. One more thing - more bad kudos to Sony for being nasty to Kokatu - they should work harder to prevent these stories being leaked, not get angry when the Internet media actually posts a rumour (as they always will).

Thumbs down to Sony: They take 2 great innovations by Nintendo and Microsoft, combine them into one much inferior version. This is exactly like what Sony did with the whole sixaxis thing at E3 last year when Nintendo already announced their Wii-wand. What's next, a 2-screened PSP for extra porn viewing?

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

This is how industry goes... Sony gets others' ideas, Microsoft buys others' companies (i.e. Rare) and Nintendo is always with wicked patents (have you read the one of the "sanity meter" in eternal darknes?...funny one... and it stinks, 'cause it mades impossible for other companies to innovate in that camp... the wiimote has a bunch of 'em also) But, if they copy, they are adulating both companies... not a bad point. They recognise that are good ideas. Sad thing is they'll say they are innovating and will sell to us as "great improvement in home entertainment". And many users will believe them...

Not too concerned about the derivative nature of the features - any sort of "truly" original idea is so rare, they almost never occur. And with 6billion+ people on this rock we call home, that's a lot of competition (edit: for original ideas!). More interested about the concept of the achievement room itself. I can see some merit in the concept of globally rewarding players for doing cool things in a game (and then allowing other players to see these rewards).

But we already have Mygamercard.net and top360tag.com for people to view achivement scores for any game, any group of games in any location in the world, achievements by region, ect. My point is that it's nothing new: They are just adding Mii to the 360 Achivement system and nothing more. Atleast with my gamerscore I'm getting free MS points + Fusion Frenzy 2 in a few weeks :-p All they are doing, again, just intergrating what those websites have done onto a Mii and nothing more.

Well we don't know all the details as of yet, so it could offer Mii like travel.... The implementation of this will have to be superb, otherwise Sony will be torn to shreds for copying the competition and might be ripped apart even if it is well done.

"Why do they call it the xbox 360? Because when you see it, you'll turn 360 degrees and walk away"

If you can decorate a room with 'acheivements' And stuff... key word is DECORATE. Why couldnt people come and visit. That sounds seriously AWOSOME. How can you bash it?

Basically, you get to make an avatar for your console (like a Mii) and this avatar has a room. As you play games and accomplish certain tasks, you will receive items with which to adorn the room that are specific to the game (achievements). The kicker is that this is going to be a new requirement for every PS3 game...
Sounds like the best of Mii + the best of achievements. How is that bad. Stolen or not. EDIT: Well, how is that bad for anyone but Nintendo and Microsoft at least... It's not good for them

I fly this flag in victory!

Sounds like the Pirates den from Final fantasy XII to me. Kotaku are just whining about something sony warned them about. Kotaku has the right to print whatever they want and Sony has the right to reserve first hand info. Kotaku is just crying and people are sopping it up. It really does not matter anyways. http://kotaku.com/gaming/sony/sony-and-kotaku-makeup-240922.php

Honestly, I don't really see the point ... Achievements are designed to be geek-cred and every game is forced to support them ... Miis (I suspect) are going to be used in a wide variety of (possibly inexpensive or downloadable) games ... I could be wrong, but it doesn't sound like this has the geek-cred direction of the XBox 360's achievements nor does it sound like it has the practical application of Miis ...

Wow... how typically Sony this all stinks ;) If they would have done what 99% of other, large companies would have done "We don't comment on rumors" - none of this would have happened, and the credibility of the original rumor would have taken a dive. And now they have decided that blacklisting an online media publication isn't that good for business. LOL...
