Forums - Nintendo Discussion - The worst Nintendo holiday season line-up

Nintendo fans are used to have pretty lackluster holiday seasons here or there the past few generations.  The droughts of the N64 and Gamecube, in my opinion, were far worse than what we've seen on the Wii thus far.  Speaking of holiday titles in particular, 2008's Wii Music and Animal Crossing are seen as somewhat of a disappointment.  Especially compared to last year's big holiday game - Super Mario Galaxy.  But overall, which holiday season was the worst for Nintendo?

My pick:  1997

I only had an N64 and I looked at the PS1 holiday line-up with nothing but envy that year.  They got Colony Wars, Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, Street Fighter Collection, Azure Dreams, Einhander, Tomb Raider II, Megaman Legends, Tomba!, Tales of Destiny, Grand Tourismo, and Klonoa: Door to Phantomile.

What did we get on the N64!?

Diddy Kong Racing...

Not that DKR was a bad game, because it wasn't.  But that was Ninty's sole, big holiday release!  It was the WORST... I'll never forget it!

What was the most disappointing Nintendo holiday line-up for you?

This year.

Wii Music and Animal Crossing LGttC

At least DKR was a long, fulfilling and fun game for both gamers and non-gamers. Wii Music is... weird, and Animal Crossing is essentially an N64 port with the 'City' addition and Wii Speak.

1997 = Goldeneye so no.

Id say this xmas by far.

Anyways, believe it or not, I never had an awful Nintendo holiday. Why?

I grew up with blue collar parents. We never had the money to buy all the latest released, so I always used Christmas as a way to get all the games I missed. That way, even if the Holiday lineup sucked I would still be happy because I would play all the games I miss throughout the year.

As for this year, its pretty weak, but considering this is the most packed Holiday season yet I think Nintendo was smart on holding some titles back.

Yet the Wii sold like crazy. Imagine releasing some games later with a userbase of 55-60 Million

None. I've never managed to play all the games I want on the console + handheld I own (N64 + GBC, GC + GBA, Wii + DS).

Throughout each year, there are at least 10 titles I really want. Do I buy 10 titles before christmas? Not really, more ala 7. Then there's between 3-4 and 10 titles that I still really want left that I can buy for christmas.

This year? Not at all.

Wii Music - seems awesome. Might give it a shot, but I have a hearing problem and have almost no sense of music, so that could be a problem.

Okami - Zelda copy? Perfect!

Super Paper Mario - Never liked any Mario RPG/Platformer before SMG, and this one seems a bit short (a mere 15 hours), so maybe not. Would have bought it if it wasn't for competition.

Batallion Wars - I love FE's, and most of Intelligent System's works. Seems a bit short though, so might not get it. Still, very cheap now.

Fire Emblem DS - I've already played FE1 (with the exception of 5 chapters, I played FE3, which only has 20 of the 25). Might get it though.

And I could consider

de Blob

Sonic Unleashed

But I don't really know, as I mentioned earlier - SMG is the 1st platformer I've ever really liked (BK was good though).

That's true.  But I left that out since it wasn't a part of the N64 holiday line-up.  Goldeneye 007 was a late summer release (late August, IIRC).

@ Oyvoyvoyv - you (and Pap64) sort of described what my situation is now.  Being as though I work full-time and am in the process of finishing up University, I don't have a lot of time to play games.  That being what it is, I have a HUGE back log of games to play.  I'm playing what's listed in my sig at the moment, and I still have Wario Land: Shake It!, Tomb Raider Underground, Endless Ocean, and Tales of Symphonia: DotNW.  I still haven't picked up Mushroom Men yet... and I won't even get into all of the gems dropping next year.

So with that said, the dirth of games this year does not effect me in any way.

Also, you got some great games on your 'to get' list in BWii, Okami, and Super Paper Mario.

This year I'm quite positive about that.
Next year will be great! I hope so...

Yes and I still do!  Welcome to VGC, pap64!

1897, they just release ports of their old card games - not a single new game
