Forums - Gaming Discussion - where are the Japanese RPGs for PS3?

Sony used to be the king of JRPG but 2 years into its life there are virtually non availble. I mean Valkyria Chronicles is a Strategy RPG but where are they?

I know some of the more recent RPGs on the 360 like Last Remnant and Infinate Undiscovery are not that good but still the 360 has like 3 times more RPG than Sony.

I know WKC is coming but it is only in Japan and we don't know when that is coming out in America and Europe. Also Final fantasy 13 is multiplat. With the Dragon Quest series migrated to the Wii and the 360 stole another exclusive in the form of Star Ocean and with Cry On, a new exclusive Square RPG, Mistwalkers, what the heck is SOny doing? They have a large First and second party but they seems to concentrate more on Western gamers with shooters and action games and totally ignore the RPG genre.

What happen?

Things change.

Once upon a time, all the JRPG were on the Nintendo side, the SuperNes.
More recently, Sony had all the JRPG support.

Now they are on a Microsoft console.
The Xbox 360 is the RPG console.

Never take things for granted in this world.
Things change.

My Gaming Setup

jRPG genre is not really important anymore and Sony happened to be smart enough to understand this.

@Rei

O RLY? :) Sure, they are so smart.

There's almost no point in putting any RPGs on the PS3. It's struggling to sell, Microsoft is writing checks for established franchises, and everything else is going to the Wii because it's the dominate console. With the revelation of DQ X, the Wii has become the definitive JRPG console and like so many times Dragon Quest is the catalyst to the shift in support, meaning if SE is putting their staple RPG franchise on the Wii over the 360 and the PS3, RPG developers have no reason to be on the fence about that platform anymore as it is the only one with a guaranteed future.

wow man keep ur opinion to ur self!!! i personally dont care for them alot but i gots tons of friends that do and everyone has their own personal taste.

I mostly play RTS and Moba style games now adays as well as ALOT of benchmarking. I do play other games however such as the witcher 3 and Crysis 3, and recently Ashes of the Singularity. I love gaming on the cutting edge and refuse to accept any compromises. Proud member of the Glorious PC Gaming Master Race. Long Live SHIO!!!!

I'm a bit confused about your title, and why you choose to discount FFXIII because it's multi.

if it matters to you that much. WKC will outsell all 3 RPG you listed on xbox.

but again, don't think it really matters.

Soriku (Feb 10/08): In 5 years the PS3/360 will be dead.

I have yet to play a great JRPG on this current gen, I doubt WKC will change that. I'll be waiting for FF13 and versus just like most people.

But in reality, outside of the big hitters (pokemon, FF, KH, DQ), JRPGs just aren't the hardware drivers they used to be. It's a sub genre with minimal room for innovation and growth.

My guess is that Sony realizes this and as a result, they put much more resources on games that cater to westerners.
