Forums - Sony Discussion - Home - Biggest ever Playstation software cash cow?

Home is going to be a major cash cow. Sony is trying to work with as many companies as possible to turn the service into the next generation of the Internet. 1. Can you imagine if Sony had ownership of the next Internet? 2. Sony is taking all the best things about the internet and rolling them into one service, and more importantly under one username, and password.

3. The eventual goal for home for Sony from a consumer standpoint, is to allow people to buy directly from places like Nike, GAP, Warner, and basically any company that wants to joi in on the Home revenue wagon. We will be able to buy a T-shirt from GAP, and recive both a digital version for our avatar, and a physical version for our being. To me and many everyone I have showed Home to this is something they want very badly. It gives you the ease of a single login, and makes purchaseing a breeze due to skipping the regestration proccess everytime you shop somewhere new online. It also allows you to make a space that is personalized right down to the stuff you really own.

Home is like Second Life, Myspace, Facebook, iTunes, World of Warcraft, Xbox Live, and the mass of the consumer side of the internet rolled into one. I think this thing is going to be very big in the news all of next year, and for many years to come afterwards. As the PS3 becomes cheaper, and more mainstream people relize the simplisity of Home, and the convinince of shopping on the service, it will start to snowball. The amount of parteners in Home will grow rapidly, and it will not take long before we have places like Gamestop, Blockbuster, Walmart, and more wanting a piece of the pie. In no time I expect to see sites like IGN, 1up, VGchartz, and more jumping in with their own spaces. 4. Home is going to become a phnomenon.

1. I don't think it is possible to "own" the internet.

2. Reaaaaaaaaaaallly?  I can go to a virtual eBay?  I can play all the great internet games?  I can do virtual shopping for clothes and stuff?  All in Home?

3. Most people would prefer to go to a physical location and actually try the clothes on, plus avoid shipping charges.  If you buy stuff solely online, you don't know if it will really fit well or not.

4. I really doubt it.  It is not trying to do anything extravagantly more than what has been done before.

Seriously, a cash cow?  With all the cost of development and upkeep, you really think advertising and having to buy personal virtual upgrade clothes and furniture is going to make them a mass profit?  Since the majority of PS3 users are not the type that would use this new service, I don't see it helping them.  I mean, what's the point of all the advertising and such, if only 5 million out of the 14 million PSN accounts ever use it much?  And I don't know about you, but if it becomes something of just an advertising ploy, I think people would be turned off by this.  Really, you're making Home sound like Sony is planning the next version of internet and that it will be based off of Sony's model.  I don't know about you, but typing in a website address on the computer, doing a few quick clicks, and entering my information is a lot faster and easier than walking around to navigate to different locations, waiting for the increased load times, and fumbling with a controller to type and choose things.

The next big thing in virtual worlds and the internet will have to be based on human mind interaction, otherwise it would not actually show any benefits besides turning our society into anti-social, obese, lazy individuals.

Home will be a social experience that quite frankly I predict to flop.  I think only a third of PS3 users will even use it much past the first week or so.  People are not going to spend their hours of free time on this service when they could be using their $400 investment to play games and blu-rays like it was meant for.  Mark my words, Home will not be a phenomenon; it will follow the trails of Second Life and other social worlds and eventually discontinue or lose most of its appeal.  Unless they make it their next console interface that is... but then people would probably be even more turned off of Sony brand or ignore as much of it as possible so they can play games.

I really appreciate the views of the 360 crowd on this one. Your unbiased assessment of the value of Home is really enlightening.

The best thing about Home is I don't have to use it if it sucks. I really am not a big fan of avatars, I see no value in them at all. The XMB is a great navigation system, and the Playstation store is just about perfect. If the gaming spaces in Home and the parlor games are fun, that would just be an additional value for the PS3.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Well since I am part of both crowds (PS3 and 360), and have experience with all services in question (Home, XBL, Second Life, WoW, etc.), I think that would make me more unbiased than someone with just a PS3, don't you think?

And I agree, the best thing about Home is not having to use it, which was my main point. I don't think many people are going to use it. Definitely not the majority.

@nightsurge - Maybe you can provide your unbiased opinion in a couple days after the service is released. The current beta is more of a load test than anything. The open beta is supposed to include many of the features lacking in the closed beta.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Do we have an idea of the pricing for Home advertising?

Tons of companies have signed up to have Game Spaces or Content in Home.

Looks like all of the people who don't want it to do good are going to be very unhappy. Pubs/Devs seem to be on board with Home. I think it'll be a huge cash cow.

they certainly will be unhappy, all them years they played ps1 then ps2, and now just solely because they bought 360 1st they want ps3 to fail - how pathetic

@nightsurge you seeem to want anything ps3 related to fail..............its ok to prefer one over another, but to want another to fail is just sad.

i prefer my ps3 way way more than my 360 or wii, in games and internet, but i wouldnt want the other 2 to fail or anything.

go bang your bongo drums elsewhere.....ps3 owners have been waiting a long time for this, its free to use and free to download. i predict many people will make some kind of use for it as its free

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

Actually, not many features are being added. Mostly just the addition of some of the game spaces for Uncharted and Far Cry. Regardless, I will be glad to offer a fresh perspective of the updated service come this weekend.

So HOME has achieved a huge marketshare with not much potential growth?

I think not.

How can you say it's not for gamers???? It's on a platform known as the SONY Playstation 3 Computer Entertainment System. The Playstation 3's main functionality is gaming isn't it??? If it wasn't for gamers then why would they put it on a system that's mainly revolved around BD gaming and movies??? Is it for the Movie lovers???? Because that makes even less sense......... why they hell would the have rooms for online games like warhawk if it were for movie lovers????

As for the "CashCow" thing, that's a potential yes. And am pretty sure SONY would love that to be the case.

Netflix is on the Xbox 360. Do you think someone interested in gaming only will bother with it?

From what we've seen so far, most of Home's game-related content is alot more social based - there's actually not too many features/options that making gaming easier and more convenient. I can understand that they're aiming for a very social experience, but if Home isn't doing much else besides making it easier for me to meet people, I can't say I'll be using it very much for gaming purposes.

And I wonder......why is it that I can only chat with people if they're playing the same game as me? This is what I'm talking about: Making gaming itself easier and more convenient. It's starting to look like PSN does a better job at meeting people than it does at communicating with them - sending messages back and forth can really be a hassle sometimes. Unless Home can provide more features like that, I'm definitely gonna say that Xbox Live still has some communication advantages over PSN.

I've never once wished PS3 or Wii would fail or any great games like LBP or Killzone 2 to fail.  Any favoring of the 360 is because it has provided me a much better experience than the others.  The PS3 is still a great Blu-Ray player for me, and it has some games I will be getting soon.  It just hasn't lived up to what it should have.  The 360's games have been better, and the PS3 exclusives have let me down so far (SOCOM especially).

As far as PS3 owners having waited a long time for this, you can't say that, because that infers that every PS3 owner has been waiting and wanting it, which is not true.  Some have been waiting, some could care less.  I was actually excited and thrilled to get the beta code and WANTED Home to be good.  It just wasn't what I had hoped, and ended up boring me, which is why I post now.  I'm not the only PS3 owner that dislikes Home, i'm just targeted because I also own a 360 and have spent much more time with it than the PS3.
