Forums - Gaming Discussion - "PS3 Has No Games" Argument Needs To Die A Terrible Death

I think we're all aware of the enduring nature of stigmas and stereotypes - it's why we still have parents believing games are just for kids - and if we're not careful, certain stereotypes can run rampant and directly influence consumers who are seeking information. Since the launch of the PlayStation 3, the default argument against it, presented by almost everyone from retailers to idiotic fanboys, is this: "but it has no games!"

I was in a Best Buy today, with no intention of stopping near the game section (I was shopping for other people; 'tis the season and all that), and I overheard one of those "Geek Squad" register biscuits trying to help a customer decide between the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. I paused and pretended to take an interest in the accessories display, as I'm always interested to hear just how ill-informed the retailers really are. At first, it sounded like he knew what he was talking about: Live is a slightly better online service but the Network is free, the 360 still suffers from a system failure but things are getting better, and if you opt for the Arcade version, you can nab a 360 for only $199. Yes, all true. Then I heard it- "but the one thing you have to remember is that the PS3 still doesn't have many games out." I wanted to rip open a Wii-mote and jam it into his eye socket. Can we get past the outdated ignorance, please?

At the start of the PS3's lifespan and well into 2007, there was no denying the system had a lack of software. It tends to happen; it has happened to just about every console in history, and that most certainly includes the Xbox 360. But for some reason, everyone has just forgotten about that and still assume the PS3 "has no games." Right. If you check either GameRankings or Metacritic (I don't care what source you use; the results will be very similar), you will notice that both the PS3 and 360 have almost the same number of titles rated over 80% in 2008, and the same holds true for the elite gems over 90%. Furthermore, with the exception of Gears of War III, the PS3 exclusive lineup in 2008 - featuring Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, LittleBigPlanet, Wipeout HD, and Resistance 2 - rocks the house, and third-party developers have basically worked past all their initial PS3 issues. The days of the pathetic 360-to-PS3 port are gone.

Yes, the 360 has been out for a full year longer, so of course it has "more" games. But as it currently stands, are we really going backwards and talking about games like Kameo? What we're talking about is the here and now, and besides a few exclusives here and there (Fable II and Left 4 Dead are worth mentioning), the PS3 has just about everything the 360 has, and then some. Here's a look at the year's best, and I doubt many will disagree with the list:

  • Grand Theft Auto IV
  • LittleBigPlanet
  • Bioshock
  • Gears of War 2
  • World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King
  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl
  • Fallout 3
  • Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
  • Braid
  • Rock Band 2
  • God of War: Chains of Olympus
  • Dead Space
  • Left 4 Dead
  • Resistance 2
  • Burnout Paradise
  • Devil May Cry 4
  • Fable II
  • FIFA Soccer 09
  • Prince of Persia
  • Wipeout HD
  • Soul Calibur IV
  • Sins of a Solar Empire
  • Valkyria Chronicles
  • Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
  • Guitar Hero: World Tour
  • Far Cry 2
  • MotorStorm: Pacific Rift
  • Call of Duty: World at War
  • Mirror's Edge
  • Pure

These are 30 of the year's best, and and of this list, 21 are available on the PS3 while 19 are available on the 360, and there are 6 that are exclusive to the PS3 while 4 are exclusive to the 360. Overall, the PS3 has 91 titles that have an average review score of 80% or higher at GameRankings, and the 360 has 139 at 80% or higher. Now, factor in that the 360 came out one full year earlier, and you end up with this statistic: the 360 has produced 139 80%+ games in just over 3 years time while the PS3 has produced 91 80%+ games in just over 2 years time. ...I'm not very good at math, but I believe the quality ratio is pretty damn similar.

Anyway, I'm just sick and tired of hearing this ridiculous argument from people who claim to know something about video games. There are pluses and minuses for every system out there, but in no way can the argument regarding lacking software for the PS3 be used. Not ever again. Hell, 2009 will add exclusives like Killzone 2 (wait for the explosion, 360 fanboys), Heavy Rain, God of War III (wait for that explosion, too), Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and possibly Gran Turismo 5...I'm sorry but what will either Microsoft or Nintendo produce to compete with that? The PS3 owned the exclusive battle in 2008, and it will do so again in 2009. That is the prediction.

WE DON'T KNOW BECAUSE THERE IS NO LINK!!!!11111111eleven

But normally when you buy a PS3, you have to buy the games seperately! It has no games! ;_;

The Wii has games and so does the Xbox 360 Arcade!

Tease.

Thats a fact.

My Xbox 360 came with no games but my PS3 it had Metal Gear Solid IV and some stupid PSN game!

@ Squilliam )

here is europe nearly every PS3 is bundled with games, and those that are not are bundled with movies, so most PS3 do have games ;)

@ thread-title )

I agree, and people who are still proclaiming and/or believing that are pretty sad

i think that argument was debunked a long time ago .... but still good to stress the point.

Yes, it's a fact that the PS3 is the console that has the most exclusives, so I don't know why people keep spreding this nonsense.
