It seems that the $199 price point has really been a success for Microsoft, because the 360 is now just under 400,000 units away from surpassing the PS3 in sales this year. Good job Microsoft, but even more good job sony for still being in the lead for this year despite being twice the price!

Here's the numbers: Total 360 sales from the week ending January 5 to the week ending November 29: 8,369,774

Total PS3 sales from the week ending January 5 to the week ending November 29: 8,709,255

Gap this year: 339,481

With the extra functionality of the PS3 (Blu-Ray player and built in wi-fi), I think a lot of people see the premium price as a "value added" deal.

That being said, with the brand name, extra functionality and momentum the PS3 had earlier this year, I am pretty amazed at the turn around in sales.

Which console will end up on top this year? 340,000 is a lot of consoles to surpass, but then again it was like a 1 million unit gap just a few weeks ago... I don't know how this will end.

I would expect the 360 to surpass the PS3 in yearly sales this week and by the end of the year have atleast a 500k lead (possibly 1 million).
