Forums - Sony Discussion - Planning to buy a PS3 – A few questions

Hi, everybody. As some people already know, I’m going to travel to the USA in January and I plan on buying a PS3. However, there a few things I don’t know and buying abroad (this will be the first time I travel to another country) is always more complicated than at your own country and I was hoping some of you could help me.

Also, with the price of the dollar currently rising against my country’s currency, I probably will only be able to buy the PS3 and maybe a game. So, I want to get the best possible deal.

Here are my questions (a lot of them, sorry):

1)      Are there bundles at Wal-Mart, Best Buy, etc. (like to get the PS3 with a game or an extra controller for 399 dollars)? These will be my main stores to look for it because they appear to be everywhere in the US.

2)      Do stores like Wal-Mart, Best Buy, etc. sell cheaper used games?

3)      Are the taxes in Florida (that’s where I’m going) 7% of everything I buy?

4)      Do all those stores have PSN cards for sale?

5)      Does the PS3 come with a headset? If not, can you recommend a cheap one?

6)      Does the PS3 come with any demo or PSN game already on the HDD?

7)      Is there a lot of people still playing Warhawk (like anytime I try I will find hundreds of people playing it)? I really want to play this game. Especially since it’s cheaper now and will give hours and hours of fun, since it will be awhile before I can get another game.

8)      Does anyone know any good router (cheap, cheap, cheap) that works well with the PS3?

If you can help me even with just one of those questions, it will be a great help and I’ll really appreciate it.

Thanks to everybody in advance.

PS – If anyone knows of any good deal or good store around the Kissimmee, Florida area , please let me know, because that is where I will be staying. Thanks again.

I can answer a couple of your questions.  Both Best Buy and Gamestop sell PSN cards.  Gamestop sells used games, I don't think the other stores sell used games yet.  The PS3 does not come bundled with a headset, but any usb headset will work.  I have the jabra bluetooth headset that shipped with Warhawk and it is pretty good.  I last played Warhawk a month ago and I didn't have a problem finding a game.  Good luck with your PS3.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Thanks, man. It is nice to know that any headset works. Makes things a bit cheaper. :D

I forgot to ask: does anyone know any good router (cheap, cheap, cheap) that works well with the PS3?

I will add this to the original post.

Since I'm not native to the US, I can't help you with many of those questions, but I intend on importing my games from these two sites:

estarland / video games plus online.

Maybe those two will help you find some cheap games when you're back in Brazil.

good luck with the search and possible purchase.

Thanks a lot. I will check those sites out.

I think any cheap router works fine with the PS3. I have set up all different brands and types for friends and myself and never had a problem with any one of them. I would say just buy a cheap Linksys router at Wal-Mart or Best Buy and you should be fine.

Make sure that if you want to play PS1/PS2 games on your PS3 that you get the memory card adapter (you can save new files directly on the PS3 hard drive, but need the adapter to plug in old memory cards that you have previous saves).

Also make sure to get an HDMI cable if your TV and receiver support it. They do not come packaged in. (I think this is still true - I bought mine on the release date so it has been awhile.)

@ midwinter: how is he going to play a PS2 game if all current consoles are non-BC?

Ahhh Crap - all of the new units are not BC?!?!?! Sorry - that sucks.

do they not sell PS3's in brazil or is it because the price is very different?

cause I dunno how it is in brazil, but be carefull of having the proper power outlets and plugs (US is 120V with flat plugs)

I just say that cause I used to import my consoles to europe :p
