In all honesty, I am a hardcore gamer and was rightfully scorned by the Wii. I bought it and had both Wii Sports and Wii Play (bought for the controller and games for $10 more). Wii Sports was the most played game, but that is because if was the only game. I had Zelda for a while until I beat that, but afterwards, I just didn't find any games really worth buying because all Nintendo's games are more for parties and not just while you are sitting around.
I just really don't think Wii Sports and Wii Play's sales should count because I still just don't see them as a full retail game. From playing it, it is less detailed and has less to do than many XBLA games. Obviously I let my scorn cloud through to my thread which as I wrote, I continually felt like it didn't really amount to anything :p
I wanted to emphasize what they needed to improve on, but I guess as a hardcore gamer, they only need to improve on that to attract the audience like me. For regular casuals like the ones that are buying Wii and software like crazy, I guess my suggestions don't really apply. I still can't believe Japanese will buy the game for $40... just seems like a ripoff to me, but I guess it only does because I'm more of a hardcore, just like some of the others that kind of shared my view. My Wii has hence been sold, btw. If Nintendo brings their next console into the HD realm, I'll look into it, but for now I guess the games and the graphics just aren't for me. |
Ah. I feel for you, nightsurge. I really do. You bought the wrong console to fit your needs. Naturally, there are games that satisfy some of those needs even on the Wii, but they are more plentiful and better experiences on the PS360.
This does not, however, mean that other people have the same needs as you. It does not mean they value the same things you do. This is the important thing to remember, and it's the reason saying things like 'Wii sports is only worth $10' can blow up in your face like this.
There is a discussion on the Steam Forum about whether or not Left 4 Dead should be considered a Mod or a full game. There are lots of people thinking it should only be considered a mod because it has so little content. The weapons are few and there's no real variety. There are only 6 types of zombies to fight against. Only 5 chapters that take an hour a piece to complete. There's nothing in the full game that wasn't in the demo except versus mode and 4 1/2 chapters, and so on.
Then there's the opposite side that claims that of course it's a full game. There's been major upgrades to the engine, you can really play for hours and hours, it's definately a really polished product, and so on. I can sympathise with both sides, there IS very little content (compared to other FPS's today) but it's all very proffesionally done. Whether or not it's a mod or a full game it seems really fun to me, and thus the discussion seems slightly pointless.
This discussion is very similar to your feelings about Wii Sports, so let me tell you a little bit about the side that you're not seeing. Wii Sports has NO barriers to entry. It is simple yet fun. It never once belittles the player, or throws him/her into a situation that feels scary. It does all it possibly can to be as accessible as possible. This does mean it has to exclude some things more serious players would want, like tons of options, advanced controls and the like. In short, it cuts content to enhance the experience for everyone.
I find Wii Sports to be highly addictive. I'm still playing it with my friends every time I possibly can. The Tennis, Bowling and Baseball are all games that I really love. It's just awesomely fun, especially with a friend to play with or against. In my opinion, the options it cuts out enhances the experience more than it hampers it. It's most definatly one of the best experiences I've had this generation (Portal, the game I put above the rest, does the exact same thing btw).
I'm not saying that you're wrong in thinking Wii Sports is a bad game. You're fully entitled to this opinion. However, if you think that Wii Sports should be excluded for not being a game, you're totally missing the point. That is, the millions of people that think Wii Sports is as fun as you can have with a game. In my mind, there is no doubt that Wii Sports sell the Wii more than the Wii sell Wii Sports, but this is opinion and not fact.
As for what Nintendo needs to improve on, I would agree that they need better third party support, as I wrote in my original reply to your opening post. I would not say that Nintendo need to work on their first party support however. That is, and has been so far, more than adequate.
