Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Is it Wii Bingo week or something? Wii - PS360 not competing...

Well, I mean, I can afford more than one system, but justifying it is hard because I have to consider diminishing returns of enjoyment in terms of dollars spent. I plan to buy a 360 this weekend, but that's still a lot of Wii games.

I don't think "logic" is a binary concept here.

Logic in this case is applied to the topic: "Wii and PS3/360 not competing" The gamers on this forum are not representative of the sales of games. Niche games can be really important here but barely make a splash in the general population.

In the same way the Wii doesn't have a whole lot of shooter type games, the Xbox 360 doesn't have Mario Kart, Wii Fit, Wii Sports so obviously there are segments which they aren't competing for and there are areas where they are, such as Music games and a lot of cross platform titles in the middle ground. Obviously the hyperbole that there is no competition is absolutely wrong, but there is a grain of truth in that. Perhaps the way to take this thread to fruitition is to determine the degree of competition between them, and game sales data is a good way to begin.

Btw, enjoy your Xbox 360.

I agree: full-on competition between the various platforms doesn't really exist because they don't appeal in the same way. One can't claim that the Wii isn't stealing sales from the other two, per se, but it would be equally fallacious to say that they are attempting to appeal to all of the same people. I don't want to get into the matter of whether or not Nintendo is attempting to reach out to the core audience, because that can't be all on Nintendo, and it's true that third-party support has shaped the Wii's library very, very differently.

Thank you, I do plan to. Here's hoping Prince of Persia is a good first pick.

Actually the GC had a load of cross-plat games with the PS2 and XBox. I much preferred GC ports of PS2 games last generation.  I'm playing the GC port of Summoner 2 on my Wii right now, actually.

I think I'm done trying to convince you guys that SSBB and Mario Kart target different demographics than MLB 09, Halo 3 and GT5P, though. Believe what you will.

Sure, it had cross-plat games with the PS2 and XBox, but how did they sell? Most of the top selling XB multiplats (Splinter Cell, GTA, NFS, NFL) either did much better on XB/PS2, or didn't even release on the GC.

Believe me, I understand SSBB and Mario Kart may target different demographics than Halo3 / GT5P. The problem is, the top two selling GC games were - guess what - the predecessors of the two games you mentioned, SSBM and Mario Kart: DD! That only proves the point that technically, if this "Wii is not competing" argument holds, then so does "GC is not competing."

Seriously, where do we draw the line here? Yeah, maybe most Wii Fit owners aren't into GTA. People buying Brain Training / Pokemon may not see the appeal in a PSP either, does that mean the DS isn't competing? That would be hard to believe, since the system has engulfed all of the Japanese third party support.

Also, how would one explain where all the old PS2 / XB users went? Is the market shrinking, or is the Wii competing?

Phasers are better.

Tease.

Actually, I suppose the clearest form of competition between the Wii and HD consoles is the competition for third party support.

Right now the HD consoles are winning by a lot.

I probably know the answer to this but you're talking about quality not quanitity right?  Cause Wii is winning in the quantity department just right now quality is rather shoddy though third parties aren't a huge deal to me most third party games for me rarely interest me longer then a month even the "good" ones.

MaxwellGT2000 - "Does the amount of times you beat it count towards how hardcore you are?"

Wii Friend Code - 5882 9717 7391 0918 (PM me if you add me), PSN - MaxwellGT2000, XBL - BlkKniteCecil, MaxwellGT2000

I would say that third parties are not giving their all in their Wii efforts, yes, and it shows.

Well things like Call of Duty, Shaun White Snow Boarding, and Skate It, there are good third party efforts and even more coming so quality isn't as bad as things seem.

Yes, this is the Wii bingo week, like nearly every week before NPD data are released this gen.
This is so that people don't take seriously the clobbering the Wii and DS are giving to their competition.
This is so that the gaming industry stay crouched in its ridiculous and diminishing bubble.

The real interesting question is... Would they "be competing" if the Wii was losing?

Exactly.

I swear that's the main motivation for penning these types of articles...  The Wii was supposed to come in last place.  It's not nearly as powerful as its competitors and it's destroying them in the marketplace.  For some reason, HD fans are just embittered by that.

I would think if folks weren't interested in Wii, they'd just ignore it as opposed to playing Wii Bingo over and over again, ad nauseam.

I just don't get it...
