Forums - Gaming Discussion - The next generation of consoles going beyond gaming.

In the current generation of consoles the boundaries between consoles and computers are shrinking rapidly. Nintendo has brought as a user interface which makes a computer like operation on a console possible and they have expanded the very scope of market to include exercise type games (Wii Fit) and educational type games (Brain training). Microsoft and Sony have taken the media centre approach by placing a lot of emphasis on multimedia functionality with movies and music playing a big role in their unique selling propositions.

By combining both concepts from Nintendo and Microsoft/Sony and taking them to the next step of evolution, will we see consoles evolve from being merely games machines into a neccessary part of our lives? So instead being defined as a device for playing games, the consoles themselves could possibly challenge the role of the personal computer in the home and perhaps define a new role as the centre of our digital lives.

Between voice, motion and gesture recognition interfaces which will all probably be considered or discarded for the next generation of consoles the question of interface is likely to be solved. The hardware requirements were never a problematic question and the advent of HD televisions has solved the final problem of displaying text on the screen. All thats left is a final question, how far will the software take us for the next generation?

The prize which is on offer here may be much larger than simply winning a slice of the gaming pie. There is a really possibility of taking a slice of the large educational software, movie, music, exercise and even general computing markets. Consoles in a way have always acted as a hub of sorts, like an Amplifier acts as a hub for a home entertainment system. With devices becoming increasingly connected, will consoles become the hub which they all connect through? The stakes have never been higher, nor have the possibilities been so open to speculation.

Consoles are becoming PCs. And Pcs are getting more accessible.

One day the difference might be so small that they all could be categorized the same.

I do believe this is the direction in which we're heading. And the longer this generation lasts (as in the longer Nintendo rides the Wii, the longer MS coasts on their new found profitability, making back the losses of the Xbox, and the longer Sony struggles break even on the ps3), the higher a chance that we will see such things happen next gen.

@Shio: Love the sig. :D

I think the amp is the only thing that won't get eaten by consoles and people would want on its own. We want more than 3 types of amps, but we only need one way to play DVDs or CDs or internet radio or anything else, so all the multimedia stuff can be in one box.

But other than that, I can see it happening.

So consoles taking Mac's place in the computing world? Brilliant I love it! Really though consoles will most likely won't take a real place in computing for another 2 gens I would bet, but it's obvious it's coming with Web browsers on handhelds, many applications, and PS3 having folding and helping find cures.

I am ready for virtual boy the home edition in full color.

One day. One day.

Next generation consoles could be so expensive that the consumer would be better off buying a gaming PC.

Next gen console will be made of but a single chip which you must shove up your nose or any other desired location to enjoy the embodied awesome 7D graphics of the worlds all in 7777QDp BD (Beyond Def)...

Also supporting Flash 7000 to ____ ____ _____ online.

Awesome sauce right there.

I hope they don't become like PCs, then the markets will merge and things will be the same. Already you can play many xbox 360 games on the PC, PS3 games too. If they become too similar why buy one console or the other, why buy a gaming PC for that matter (high end stuff). There will be little attraction of customers to your product.

The differences make not only one console succeed but many. Wii is doing outstanding but Xbox 360 and PS3 are doing good in their own right. If there are little differences than most likely one will succeed when there are many choices like three or more. PS2 just destroyed xbox and GC, it was embarrassing, the public chose one console and everyone else just followed. There is no reason to buy a 2nd console in that case but when there are differences than people get attracted to some aspect of one console and of another console, also gives a more higher chance to attract new people in the market.

Consoles aren't on a tragectory which will turn them into PCs but perhaps they are in a position to answer a fundamental question of usability and functionality. You can't use your computer unless you're sitting down so perhaps having one of the console makers take the lead in this field can yield surprising results for the future.

Computers as they currently are can be called stale. Its the same old mouse/keyboard interface thats been used for over 20 years and perhaps its time for a change to let people interface with them in a much more natural way, like how the Wiimote is a more natural and intuitive answer for a lot of games.
