Kids will not have CD's or DVD's or Bluray and they will live on the moon with rocketpacks powered by X-Box.

And pink unicorns will fly them there, where they shall bathe in rivers of milk chocolate.

But you can download full games at present on ps 360.
I mean kids today download most if not all of there music so the transition period is well underway imo.

I know that sounds simplistic but just look at what we are doing now.
10 years ago blogging like this would have been impossible.

I agree.  I actually look forward to a digital-only world.  I actually buy most of my products digitally now, and the physical items I buy are usually over the internet as well... heck I even chose to sell a dump truck of mine online versus sticking a for sale sign in the window.  This is the digital age, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

While I do endorse the idea of all games being downloadable, I seriously hope that either physical copies are available or you have a way to make one once you download it.

I mean, there are lots of reasons:

-Who doesn't like showing off their massive cabinet full of games?
-What happens when you want to bring the game to your friend's place who has the same system? Tough beans?

I also think it'd be neat if, when you downloaded a game, you could burn it to a CD (just once) and go to their website and download the cover.

Basically, what I'm saying is that I hope it's like the current music industry--I can go buy a CD OR download it from online. Once I have it, I can do whatever I want with it--slap it on a memory card, put it in a dedicated player, put it in a game system, etc. I'd like to play my games from the disc, play it from my external memory, hard drive, solid state, whatever. I don't know how likely that is, but it'd be the best situation, in my opinion.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

I would imagine that aspect would have to be covered.

Say like put your memory stick in copy it down then head on over to your mates house to play it.

Maybe they would block it been copied to another system per say but be able to play it.

Something like that anyway.

Born today... Ohh I see so in about 20-25 years they will buy from the internet

long wait.

Me? I will buy stuff for another 50 years atleast.... I hope.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

I like the pretty boxes though ... seriously .. and I like building a physical collection.

That said I was the same with DVDs and CDs and now all of those are digital.

I know what you mean... I have thousands of games and movies and when people see the collection, they are like, "OMG!  What the hell?  You really don't have a life do you?"

I actually said the same thing here in the forum a week ago. I don't think it will happen with the next console generation though, I think it will happen the one after that. I think solid state flash media is the next step in the evolution of games... and then during that time period and after, the conversion to a soft-copy only.

Yeah I pretty much agree with that.

It will take a few years for the 'net to stretch far enough into the developing countires for this to happen.

Also, storage will have to greatly improve and price reduce, say about 2TB's worth for $150 or so.

Sure, the companies could focus wholey on the first world but they'd need a distribution model to make the RoI the same or more as they'd get by using physical media.

A cartridge/flashdisk idea I don't think would work too well. I don't think there is a way to get the cost of one of those down to DVD/BD levels - too many soldered bits and I'd imagine more complicated manufaturing compared to disks.

But we'll find out soon enough!
