480×272...I'm pretty sure that's less than 480i, meaning it's less than SD tv resolutions...So basically, yes, you can watch movies on the PSP, and no, it's not pretty.

It really doesn't look bad on that small of a screen. But the blurring is the real problem. Anytime there is a quick camera pan it's like Vaseline is applied to the screen and it makes playing sonic god awful since all the colors smear together.

Hey Kwaad, in your scenario, "anywhere in the world" excludes the over 99% of the world that doesn't have wireless internet access, right?

Its an interesting scenario. I can imagine in "Sony's ideal world" that this would be quite powerful. But there are some practical restrictions: 1/ Bandwidth & transfer rates: You would need to not care about BW, and have access to WiFi points with significant transfer rates (good enough for streaming, etc). I can't even get this at home on a significant ADSL connection on my PC. 2/ Power on: Would everyone just leave their PS3 running when they are away from the house? for days or weeks? It could make more sense with a WiiConnect24 system? Wouldn't it just make more sense to put the media you want on a memory stick - and carry it around with you? Its not like you are going to watch movies on a bus - randomly traveling through HotSpots? And finally - there is no reason that the Wii/DS couldn't do the same - or even the 360/Zune(?). All three sets of hardware *should* be capable of a similar system... if they actually wanted to do this. The Wii might need a USB hard drive or something for the media storage. But its interesting... curious to see what Sony actually try and do with this sort of system.

Oh dear, clueless people just happen to say lots of stupid thing. Converting Xvid to H264 in 368x208 ? How more stupid can one be ? Especially with the fact that it will destroy the quality. H264 isn't even made for that kind of poor resolution. The worst must be "the cell" (what is that exactly ? the main core of the PS3 ?) which is 2x more powerful than a core 2 duo. How more stupid can people be ? All of that to do streaming quality in one of the more cumbersome setup I ever saw, with a quality poor enough for a WiFi network latency to be enough. I hope this stupid setup is not in line with the "PSP and PS3 theory".

Ummm... I'm not saying to use that format. However 240kbit, video, 64kbit audio... looks and sounds fine. If you think it dont. You must not have spent the last 4 days, at 10 hours a day, trying to find the optimal compression/decompression. With about 8 codecs. h.264 looks AWOSOME at low res. Get your stuff right. h.264 is just another MPEG4 codec. It just uses ALOT less power for what you get, as well as the fact it is slightly more compressed. Yes, your right. It does look like ass at below 160kbit video. But then agian. So does any video. That's almost dialup speed. I was stuck in a city for 3 days for family reasons. I was near a hot spot the entire time. The slowest one I got was 30Kbs. The same as my upstream. I am quite sure that running a good compression. (MPEG4) It can easily be done to look almost flawless... And work anywhere in the world. Clueless or not. My idea would work. And clueless or not. It already works in a similar way. So let's hope the PSP never gets neat funcions like that with the PS3. Becaue it's useless and stupid. Whoever said memory card. I can store about 4 hours of video on a 1GB memory stick. When your stuck out of state for 4 days... It is very plausable that you can watch alot more than 4 hours of video. Second. I dont wanna be stuck buying 2 or 3, 4 and 8gb memory sticks for 100-400$. It's just kinda... expensive. What I am talking about is free. And for those who say 'Wiiconnect24 would be better than the PS3. Your wrong. The PS3 has standby mode as well. The Wii/DS could NOT do it. The Wii does not have enough power to encode on the fly, and the DS does not have enough power to decode MPEG4. (and the WiFi chip in the DS sucks compared to the PSP) The 360/Zune might be able to do it.

on a pixel per pixel basis it looks amazing. The highest the video can go is also the max resolution of the screen. Make your judgement based off of UMD movies. Watch spiderman 2, or advent children and be amazed.

Why would I base my judgment off of a dead movie format that isn't even part of the discussion?
