Let me be the first (in this thread, anyways) to declare that we should all follow the stellar works of The Hero of Canton Mike from Morgantown (sorry dude, but thanks to your catchprase I can never remember your username) and include a catchphrase at the end of our posts!

Personally, I'm very interested to hear what you'd put if you were so inclined to even do it at all.

My username suits me well.

Around the Network

That's why we have signatures.

Ah, what a year for gaming it was for the Playstation 3. We ended the epic saga of Solid Snake, made use of our imaginations in LittleBigPlanet, learned the fine art of trench warfare in Valkyria Chronicles, and "grimp" became a verb for almost everything among myself and my friends. Now everyone sit in a circle and gather round, while I go over the best games of 2008 for our favorite Black Box.

Best Third Person Shooter: Metal Gear Solid 4

The shooting mechanics in Metal Gear Solid 4 are probably the biggest and most noticeable improvement from previous iterations in the series. It allows the gamer to choose how they want to play the game, and allows Metal Gear Solid 4 to win Best Third-Person Shooter of 2008

Runner-up: Dead Space

Reader's Choice: Metal Gear Solid 4

Best First Person Shooter: Bioshock

Bioshock was an amazing FPS experience when it debuted on the 360 and PC, and it is just as fantastic now that it has been released on the Playstation 3. A great atmosphere and interesting combination of classic shooting mechanics and the use of special powers gained by killing little girls (or saving them if you’re some kind of pansy) make this an experience that no FPS fan should miss.

Runner-up: Resistance 2

Reader's Choice: Resistance 2

Best Action-Adventure: Metal Gear Solid 4

Being a mix of TPS and Sneaking title has certainly worked out for Metal Gear Solid 4. The Action/Adventure aspects of this title are fantastic, with new equipment such as the Octocamo which makes the camo system from Metal Gear Solid 3 automatic and more easy to use, as well as the ever useful Solid Eye. Metal Gear Solid 4 is a title that any Sneaking genre fan should have in their library.

Runner-up: Mirror's Edge

Best Fighter: Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm

Games based on anime are often plagued by the same kind of quality that movie based game “enjoy”, but that certainly doesn’t doom them to failure as Naruto: UNS proves. Fast paced fighting with over the top finishing moves and easily learned controls to teach your friends make this the best Fighter for Playstation 3 owners in 2008.

Runner-up: Soul Calibur IV

Reader's Choice: Soul Calibur IV

Best Platformer: LittleBigPlanet

Platformers are commonly done in three dimensions, but there is something to be said for the simplistic fun and beautiful presentation that a two dimensional Platformer can provide. LittleBigPlanet’s adorable presentation, classic 2d gaming, and local (jump in and out) multiplayer make for a fun experience that will bring you back to the old days of gaming when you only got a dollar a week allowance and had to stop eating Ice Cream for months to be able to afford the newest Mario game (or maybe that was just me). It is a new twist on a classic gaming mechanic that any platforming fan can appreciate and none should be without.

Runner-up: Pixeljunk Eden

Best Racing Game: Wipeout HD

Futuristic racers have been my favorite type of racing game for a long time, and Wipeout HD delivers in spades. Beautiful visuals, break-neck speeds, and a very well implemented custom soundtrack feature make for a heart pounding racing title that is well worth its discounted price on the Playstation Network and wins Best Racing Game of 2008.

Runner-up: Burnout Paradise

Reader's Choice: Gran Turismo 5 Prologue

Best RPG: Valkyria Chronicles

Japanese RPG’s are often berated for all playing too similarly, but that is one pitfall that Valkyria Chronicles easily avoids. A touchingly mature story of racism and war, with endearing personalities in the main characters as well as many of the less important side characters make this an experience that no RPG fan should miss. If you complain about the JRPG selection on the PS3 and don’t own Valkyria Chronicles then you are doing yourself a huge disservice.

Runner-up: Fallout 3

Reader's Choice: Valkyria Chronicles

Best Music and Peripheral: Guitar Hero: World Tour

Harsher competition in the genre has spurred Guitar Hero to new heights in 2008. The addition of drums and vocals, inclusion of rock legends such as Ozzy Osborne, and the ability to create your own songs makes this the best Music title of 2008.

Runner-up: Rockband 2

Reader's Choice: Rockband 2

Best Strategy: Valkyria Chronicles

Like Metal Gear Solid 4 before it, Valkyria Chronicles shows that straddling the line between genres can bring together the best of both worlds to make an incredible experience. An interesting class-wide leveling system, importance of defensive tactics such as the use of sandbags and trenches, and epic WWII-esque atmosphere make this a title that no strategy minded gamer should miss.

Runner-up: Disgaea 3

Reader's Choice: Valkyria Chronicles

Best Sports Title: PES 2009: Pro Evolution Soccer

Whether you call it Football or Soccer, there’s no denying a great title when you see it. An improved physics engine, sound, as well as enemy AI make this a sequel that every PES fan should be happy with, and any sports fan should give a look.

Runner-up: Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds

Best Game from Playstation Network: Megaman 9

Playstation Network and other online distribution systems have been a haven for game developers that want to innovate and create on a budget, and have given life to some fantastic titles. Retrogamers have united in their praise of the classic gaming in Megaman 9. It is exactly what every Megaman fan was hoping for, and wins best Playstation Network title of 2008.

Runner-up: Wipeout HD

Best Graphics: Metal Gear Solid 4

A long development and recurrent release delays may be hell for us gamers, but they certainly make for a visually pleasing end result. Metal Gear Solid 4 is a beautiful game that makes use of every second of development time to create an experience that you’ll want to see over and over again.

Runner-up: Valkyria Chronicles

Reader's Choice: Metal Gear Solid 4

Best Music Score: LittleBigPlanet

Certain lyrics in LittleBigPlanet will forever be scorned for their part in delaying the title, but it’s hard to argue with the end result. The tracks vary from the ridiculous and almost tribal beats of “Atlas” to the beautiful instrumentals of “Tapha Niang” and haunting singing of “Cries in the Wind”, but all of them fit the game perfectly. The music in LittleBigPlanet perfects exactly what the music in any game should, enhancing the experience of the game while being catchy enough that you may find yourself looking up the bands responsible for these fun and often beautiful musical works.

Runner-up: Metal Gear Solid 4

Reader's Choice: Metal Gear Solid 4

Most Innovative: LittleBigPlanet

Many console games have user created content as a side feature, but it takes a certain amount of courage and foresight to make a console game totally centered around the idea of creating and sharing user made levels. LittleBigPlanet has given life to a community of people that love to innovate and solve problems using the tools of the level editor, with an active network to help their creations on their way to stardom. It isn’t a new idea in and of itself, but having this as the focus of a console game is certainly a new idea that I hope others will take note of.

Runner-up: Mirror's Edge

Reader's Choice: LittleBigPlanet

Biggest Disappointment: Grand Theft Auto IV

It’s hard to balance innovation with keeping the fans of the series happy, and unfortunately Grand Theft Auto IV fell flat in its attempt. Numerous bugs and gameplay that lost much of the zany fun of its predecessors left a sour taste in many gamers’ mouths and wins this title the “award” of Biggest Disappointment on the Playstation 3 for 2008.

Runner-up: Haze

Reader's Choice: Haze

Best Game Noone Played: Valkyria Chronicles

Certain genres have always had a tough time achieving commercial success, and Strategic RPG’s are notorious on this regard. Disgaea 3 and Valkyria Chronicles are both great RPG’s that many will probably ignore due to the choice in battle system, and that is a real shame. Both these titles deserve more sales than they’re ever likely to get, and if you are a JRPG fan who owns a Playstation 3 and does not own one or both of these titles then hang your head in shame, because you suck.

Runner-up: Disgaea 3

Reader's Choice: Valkyria Chronicles

2008 Game of the Year: LittleBigPlanet

With the number of awards that this title has won, it probably comes as no surprise that it would win the overall. LittleBigPlanet has brought back the joys of 2d gaming, innovated with its creation and sharing system, and is just a hell of a lot of fun to boot. It deserves all the critical and commercial success it can get, and it wins the Playstation 3 Game of the Year for 2008. Congratulations to Media Molecule, I'm sure they were waiting with bated breath (sarcasm).
