Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why you should own all three consoles

The XBox 360:

Contrary to what many people may think, the XBox 360 is actually gearing up to be the PS2 of this new generation, even though it won't come near that sales record.  What I mean is that it offers the most affordable media function and looks to be the most promising with its lineup of games which, as well all know, it would be impossible to play video games without them.  Redundancy!  Who knew??  Sony is hemorraging exclusives and with XBox Live offering more for developers and gaming companies than Sony's PSN, Microsoft is offering an impressive array of titles and experiences that were once in Sony's stronghold, and this is in addition to their own stellar titles and franchises.

Unfortunately, there's this thing known as the Red Ring of Death, which is probably single-handedly responsible for the PS3 selling as strongly as it currently is.  This little phenomenon is about as sudden and inevitable as betrayal from Wash's plastic T-Rex and is about as fun as watching Fox cancel yet another brilliant television series.

The PS3:

A beautiful little machine that can do anything.  And by anything, I mean everything aside from play games released by its competition, but it can help cure diseases without slowing everything down.  Not too many consoles can boast that these days.  With Blu-Ray functionality this contraption can be used as a Hi-Def movie player that actually won the format war.  Its library of games continues to build in momentum and there are already a few exclusives that make this system a must-have for anyone's collection.  Plus I should mention that the PSN is free--unlike Live which costs a staggeringly unforgiveable fifty dollars as an annual fee.  Furthermore, someday (A term I use quite liberally) Home will be released, and pretty much everybody who has tried it has fallen madly in love with their machine.  If this trend continues, we won't have to worry about Skynet, we'll have to worry about finding human partners to keep humanity's population up.

My only real complaint about this system is not its price, despite the 400 dollar tag it is still a wonderful experience, no, my real complaint is the ruttin' mandatory install that exists on pretty much every gorram game.  I am talking about several gigs of data being occupied in the hard drive just to play the damn discs, which essentially makes the storage space on the Nintendo Wii seem impressive by comparison.  Something is wrong when one game can occupy 1/4 of the total system memory.  I'm looking at YOU, Naruto.

The Wii:

Ah, the Wii.  What's more fun than using an analog stick to waterboard some wise guy that the mob doesn't like too much?  Using the Wiimote to do it so that you really feel like you're drowning the SOB.  Obviously, a machine like this is designed for small children, and with the plethora of party games and other 'casual' titles to injure yourselves over, this console arguably has the most potential to cater to every demographic.  It's low cost and intuitive motion controls make it a bloody amazing experience provided that you can actually find a new game that you want to play.

The problem is, this is harder than it sounds.  A number of third parties each with their own similar excuses fail to offer unique content that can really push the machine for its intended purpose while satisfying their loyal fans.  Instead, the Wii is like a dumping ground for some of them to drop off titles that were submitted along with resumes by hopefuls trying to get into the biz, so you have to sift through a lot of dung to find a diamond.  (Some people would say that I should have bolded the word 'lot'.)

Inevitably, each console has given the fanboy/girl community enough ammunition to plunge the planet into a global apocalypse, as evidence can be found on the internet at every turn.  First come the flames, then the trolls, and not a Slayer in sight.  These systems each offer so much and at the same time enrage me to such an extent that it makes me want to pull a Crazy Ivan on all three companies and read a book or something rebellious like that.  So what can you do to spare yourself the frustration?  Simple.  Buy all three consoles and hope that the good cancels out the bad.  They all have their unique attributes that make them a welcome addition to the living room, but come with some crippling drawback that would make me hesitant to simply purchase but one of them and leave it at that.

But for those put off by this, there's always the PC.

Obviously this new thread I've created might stir up a bit of a hornet's nest, so I'll save some of you the trouble by inserting some pointless reference to LittleBigPlanet, declare that this thread is made of FAIL and lol myself to sleep with tears rolling down my face because I haven't actually said anything that hasn't already been said a thousand times each week.

i disagree

My opinion: Pick your personal favourite of the three and thats it.

- owning all 3 kinda makes you look like a geek with a lot of time on their hands. One console is perfect for unwinding. 2 is fine I guess, but 3 is just wrong. Your time and money is better used on other things.

One console, maybe 2, is how things hsould be. Besides, fanboyism is fun!

If only everyone had the time and money. I have a PSWii and don't have enough money to buy ALL the games I want nor the time to finish all the games I already own. For this reason, buying a 360 is not reasonable.

Don't Worry.....Be Happy

I own all three consoles and both handhelds (PSP and DS). I certainly don't have the time nor the energy at the time to enjoy all at once. But I surely try to play the best of the best games and I try to own all consoles because I don't want to be considered a fanboy and plus I am a console collector.

I don't have the money like that, but I will purchase anything I know that is entertainment.

I don't have the money for this madness!! And one of those consoles, I do not want!!!

4 ≈ One

That's why all consoles are good, now convince me, a full time student why i should sell my kidneys or sell my body to the night (ROXANNE!!!) to be able to buy another console.

I can't even buy all the great Wii games I want

I don't even have time during the term to play all the games I buy.

Nah, 360 is more than enough for everyone.

Well, for those strapped for cash (time is another matter entirely), so was I. Until I devised a strategy as cunning as Jayne's hat! Not that I have anything against a kidney-less Registered Companion, but that's besides the point.

First, I said to myself "I'm not going to ride the bus this year. I think I'll ride my bike, or walk instead (Green=Cheap, but TRENDY)." Lo and behold, the money that I wasn't spending on bus passes was thus not being spent. Twelve months of this, plus taking advantage of deals allowed me to purchase each console without hurting my budget in the slightest. I even had extra money to fend off a bunch of scary alcoholic bums. This can also be done with other non-essentials like cigarettes, alcohol and food. Okay, that was a joke. Some games are better with three drunk friends provided they don't smash your tv during an epic game of Mario Party like mine did.

As for games, I simply picked up the ones they didn't have, and when I was finished, we'd swap 'em, loan 'em out. Like we did back in the day. Furthermore, we decided to avoid new releases so that we could get games when they were cheaper, some even in the discount bin. Toss in deals at EB Games and other stores and we have more games than we know what to do with without bankrupting ourselves in the process.

And rentals don't hurt either. But hey, my strategy doesn't work for everybody. But being a smart buyer and having friends with diverse tastes in gaming really goes a long way.

Why thank you.

If you got the dough to buy all the consoles, then go ahead. Problem is, not everyone has that luxury or space. But yes, being a 3 console (and high end PC) gamer myself, I'd say that it sure does feel nice to play ANY game that I want.
