Forums - Gaming Discussion - The Fall of HD Gaming

In my opinion, the greatest risk to the future of HD gaming on the PS3 and XBox 360 is the credit crisis ...

For over a decade many companies (including videogame developers) have been able to take on more and larger projects then they could afford based on their cash flow because of the easy access to credit. When it works well, a no-name company can rapidly become one of the biggest and most important companies in their industry; when it works poorly, a company rapdily becomes bankrupt because they have more debt then they can ever pay back.

I could be wrong but I suspect that a large portion (possibly the majority) of HD videogames are financed through credit and, in an environment where credit isn't easy to access, many of these projects may not have as much money to be completed the way they were initially envisioned; and many new projects may not have access to as much money as they require to complete as initially planned (or may not have access to money at all).

Are you talking about Activision? It turned from a shovelware company like THQ and now it's a behemoth like EA.

This is like suggesting that 100% electric cars will never happen because gas prices fell in the last couple months.

HD gaming is coming. The real issue is "is it here yet?" and "If not, then when?", or how about "Did MS and Sony jump the gun?"

It's just a dumb idea to suggest that videogames will all the sudden start regressing. HD gaming isn't even a singular concept, it's just a term we use to describe the current standard in graphics. There is no reason for graphics to stop progressing. Everyone likes beautiful things.

The Nintendo Seal of Quality was not actually quality control. It was marketing. Anyone who thinks otherwise should look up NES games at that time. Angry Video Game Nerd shows some real dreck got pas that seal.

Nintendo didn't really prevent bad games. They hurt companies they dealt with other policies, and there is no fucking way Nintendo is doing that again.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

I actually wish Nintendo would start to enforce some kind of minimal standards for games on their consoles. Some of the games some 3rd parties has put out on the Wii, simply should not be played by anyone, anywhere.

It's not the shovelware that's the problem. It's the lack of major third party games to balance it out. The PS2 got Ninjabread man first, and loads of other ultra cheap games. Did you complain about it then?

It's crazy how many people I've seen making arguments with the Nintendo Seal of Quality, and not actually knowing what it really was.

Besides that, I apologize, but I'm way too tired to read through your post right now. I will catch up on it after I get some sleep.

HD or HC? HD just means resolution. You can make games like wii has with higher resolutions and those wouldn't cost more than lower resolution ones. On PC its just matter of configuration. You can usually play same games with 480p or 1600p.

(Yeah, I know theres HD buzz going on consoles. You have been able to use much bigger resolutions on PC for many years already.)

HD gaming cannot fall if it has never risen. The HD consoles are going nowhere, and their games are selling well enough, and there is no question that the next generation will be completely "HD". However,it is also true that at no point until now has HD gaming managed to rise above "non-HD" gaming. The PS2 did better than the 360 in its first year, and from there the Wii took the ball and ran with it. For all intents, HD gaming is still standing in the on deck circle.

While that's true to some extend, I think the amount of shovelware on the Wii has become problematic on it's own right. It's already much worse than it ever was on the PS2.
