If people are buying PS3 as a Blu-ray player, then the attach rate will fall and yet more third-parties will leave, plus Sony makes a large loss on each PS3 sold which wouldn't be brought back in terms of game revenue (I assume games are more lucrative than BD movies at the moment).

The Attach rate doesn't matter. If I am a studio, I would rather sell 400,000 copies with a 0.1 attach rate than 100,000 copies with a 0.8 attach rate.

Talk about missing the point...Of course the attach rate must be considered together with hardware sales, you aren't exactly inventing dynamite here!

Just to make this clear. I often hear HD-DVD backers saying how HD-DVD's attach rate is much better than Blu-ray's, even though sales wise, Blu-ray movies are twice more than HD-DVD. Therefore what I was saying is that if I am a studio and plan to back a format. Would I choose the one with stronger attach rate but less sales? or the one with lower attach rate, but more sales? And it's obvious to me that attach rate shouldn't matter because in the end, the studio's revenu is based on total copies sold. So what if there are 1 million HD-DVD players out there with an attach rate of 0.8? It's still better to back the 5 million BD player with an attach rate of 0.4.

I just wish Sony would have focussed on the gaming aspect mainly, with a few minor multi media options and not the oppossite. I've bought 2 PS3 games myself (Folks Soul and Minna no Golf 5) and planning to buy a PS3 soon or in a few months. Although I still question myself if it's a wise decision. When I buy a console I want games, a few other options could be handy, but as soon as a game console focus mostly on options other then games,... then it's not the kind of console I desire for, especially not when developers are taking a run to other consoles or even handhelds.

My friend who works at Circuit City told me that they are trained to sell the PS3 as a BR player. When people ask about a BR player, they are directed to the PS3.

Please tell me you're joking... right?

@ HappySquirrel

Except, of course, by the time the PS3 is ready to take over the position of the PS2 the Wii will have beaten it to the punch ... The PS3 could literally have Pixar level graphics and super-computer physics simulations in a game in realtime and people will not buy it if it is $300 and only has a couple of games released for it in a month.

Sony doesn't need to outperform the XBox 360 eventually to gain second place, it needs to outperform the Wii now. Arguing over the sales of the PS3 against the XBox 360 is like getting into a pissing competition into the wind, you're in a competition where you are going to lose regardless on whether you win.

IMO the XBox 360 (Premium/Elite) is currently the PS3's main longterm competitor, not because of its market performance but because of feature overlap and market overlap (more demanding high definition games, big shared multi-platform games library). The Nintendo Wii I currently view as more of a competitor to a lower-end PS2 and maybe the XBox 360 Core.

I think it's more likely for the average gamer to own a PS3 or XBox 360 next to a Nintendo Wii in the future than a XBox 360 together with a PS3. IMO Nintendo needs to capitalize as much as possible now on its advantages, at least before many more people own HDTVs and the Blu-Ray-HD-DVD war is over. With regard to the former I am more referring to PS2 owners eventually upgrading rather than vivid Nintendo / XBox fans.

PS3 vs 360 sales

I would agree if the PS3 sucked as a Blu-Ray player, but it's actually one of the best. I guess many people interested in Blu-Ray would also like to play some PS3 games like Ratchet & Clank Future, Uncharted, Killzone 2, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, etc.

But even if not interested much in gaming at all, IMO the PS3 offers far more potential than just a stand-alone player. For instance Karaoke with Singstar or watching and discussing the latest trailer in Home cinema may be of interest.

It would seem that Everyone's Golf and the new PS3 SKU gave this week one heck of a boost in sales. Will this sales boost last long enough to make developers give the PS3 a second chance?

Yeah, and up until now, the PS3 was the cheapest Blu-Ray player. Now you can get them for $400-$500...but I would never spend $400 on a Blu-Ray player, I'd rather spend $500 or $600 on a PS3...if I was ever to buy any of that stuff.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

I think that the price drop may have given the Playstation 3 a boost.

He's saying that the release of Everyone's Golf and the price... whatever-it-was helped sales for the PS3, and is wondering if the sales will continue at this level, enough to get developers to have enough faith in the system to give it another shot with their titles.
