Forums - Sales Discussion - Wii is at 5.0m already... >_<

My PS3 assumption for March 31 was based on a userbase of 1.88 million (before the site was updated today) at the end of February. That would mean 1.4 million or so PS3's sold in March. Of those, I had 1,000,000 going to Europe mostly (80% +), but also Africa , non Japan Asia and Australia. I figured 150k with Gundam in Japan, and 250k in the Americas (like January...but only 4.5 weeks). After that, demand dies down for PS3 because of the price and lack of killer apps in Europe and Japan. North American sales stay about the same 200-300k until big games come or until a big price drop comes ($50 off would take it 360 levels I think, call it a 50k per month boost in the USA). Kirby 007 was about right, if Wii is to catch 360 it will probably be this year between September (6 months from now) and December (9 months from now).

At the end of March we'll get the shipment forecasts for each console for the next 12 months. I believe Nintendo will announce 12-14million Wiis to be shipped. I don't think they can manufacture more than that. That gets the Wii around 18m-20m (sold) end of FY2007 (March 2008). I think its pretty amazing the Wii is now only 4mill behind the 360 (globally) - and its only been a few months.

Nearly half in Japan in just 3 months!!!! Just how many GC's were sold in Japan. It sounds like it wasn't very popular over there.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Nintendo announce 12-14 Million consoles by March 31st 2008 but I would doubt that is all they can produce ... After their early year shortages I suspect Nintendo is moving to manufacture 1.25 Million units per month ... I would assume that they will (probably) be looking to have a maximum capacity of (roughly) 2 Million consoles per month so that they can (in a short period of time) build up supplies to meet demand for holiday seasons and big game releases. If demand continues to increase with supply they (might) be able to produce 20 Million+ systems in a year; I would not bet on this happening though ...

Dear lord, I hadn't actually compared it to GC sales. The Wii selling amazingly well. BTW, what are you doing posting on the forums. Shouldn't you be reading mod applications? Or if you've already made the decision, at least let us know who got the position so we can stop refreshing our inboxes every five minutes.

They are at 5million. in 4 almost 5 months of produciton. They are likely to get their production up to 1.5million before the end of the year. But that still leaves them with another 13-15million to make before the end of the year. Wich would account for ramping production up as high as it would ever get. I'd say more likely 15million. total.

What do you mean by 'total?'

Nintendo have stated that the Wii has been produced at roughly 700k/month so far. The reason they will have 6mill by March, is that they spent an extra month (or more) before launch producing units. They aim to have production up to around 1mill / month by April/May (or later in the year). I think if people are expecting 1.25mill / month for the next FY, this is a little overly ambitious (15mill units).

I'd say there is good evidence Nintendo is making over a million Wii's already. Look at January. 450,000 sold in Japan. 435,000 sold in USA. 50,000 or so in the rest of the Americas. Take the European data and cut it in half post 800,000 from December 2006 (1.41-.8)/(2)) = 300,000. That would be..450,000+485,000+300,000=1,235,000 in January 2007...my formula accounts for slight drop offs in Japan, Eur, and N.A....and put it at around 1.10 million per month
