Forums - Gaming Discussion - Will Killzone 2 be a system seller?

It's funny how some people already take a March price cut for granted.

As for the topic question, I would be surprised if KZ2 was a system seller when the game launches. GT5 is the potential system launcher the PS3 still has.

Not the magnitude of MGS4 or Halo 3, but yes, it will be a system seller. It will sell consoles like Fable II sold consoles. Maybe more. Because, judging by the almost-unanimous beta impressions, Killzone 2 is awesome.

And Sony actually knows how to advertise now.

Sony knows how to advertise now? Really? Then how do you explain away Resistance 2, Little Big Planet, SOCOM and Motorstorm 2 all not hitting a million yet? Between all four they have approx. 1.5 million in sales. That's their entire Fall lineup thus far...1.5 million. How can that be anything but poor advertising?

You want R2 to have sold a million units in two weeks without Others?

It's more than six times what the first Resistance opened to in NA. It sold more than five times in Others what it sold in NA.

LBP was a new IP, it could go either way. And to the casual observer, it was a 2D sidescroller, (where you control a little thing made of cloth) most of which you have to make yourself.

SOCOM was on PSN, and opened to horrible reviews thanks to the overall bugginess at release.

MotorStorm 2... well it wasn't particularly good...

I didn't say their advertising was a touch on Microsoft's, but it's improving.

so true. Who would have thought that Fable2 alone would outsell Socom, motorstorm, Resistance2 and LBP combined at this time? Of course things will change, but this is not a good sign for software-sales on the PS3. But actually I have seen plenty of LBP ads here in Germany.

Skeeuk your enthousiam for the PS3 is legendary... but so far, it is on the PS3 that we have never seen a game like ... GOW2.

... so KZ2 is the next candidate on the IWBH list... I hope it will sincerely do good this time ...

Evan Wells (Uncharted 2): I think the differences that you see between any two games has much more to do with the developer than whether it’s on the Xbox or PS3.

Oh, I forgot this one:

IGN and G4TV after playing the beta version have said that the game has the best graphics till date beating Crysis

Did they really say this? I haven't seen any KZ2 screenshot with as good environments as Crysis has. Even if they did say that, I'm pretty skeptical about that claim.

Sure, KZ2 has great graphics, but beating Crysis?

Well, you've got to think. What have been the biggest "system sellers" for the PS3 so far?

GranTurismo5P and MGS4.

It won't be as big as either of them.

So, if you think this is going to be Gears of War 2 PS3 version, lower your expectations.

but K2 is looking to blow G2 out of the water..............i wouldnt even say the 2 are comparable

the grafix in K2 are shockingly good, and i belive we will never see a game like it on 360.

gurilla have also proved you can have the best grafix with most action without the need for mandotory installs.

He was obviously speaking from a sales perspective.

I didn't say their advertising was a touch on Microsoft's, but it's improving.

Resistance=It should at least be approaching a million in the US after two weeks. It's the premiere FPS exclusive on the console and it got it's ass handed to it by Call of Duty multiple times over. In fact most of the best selling fall titles on PS3 have been multiplats. Why shouldn't it be able to do one million in two weeks in one region? Isn't it a big title? A headlining title? Sony sees fit to put it squarely against Gears of War every two years, so they must see something in the franchise. Maybe if Sony advertised for R2 as aggressively as Microsoft advertises for Gears then R2 may be a comparable franchise in sales figures.

Little Big Planet=It should have done better. Maybe it would have if Sony didn't botch the launch. That in itself is a reflection of their inability to market correctly. Pulling the launch was a bad decision, and frankly I saw LBP commercials on all the wrong channels. Why am I seeing LBP on ESPN, but not Nickelodeon? Sony themselves said they wanted to make Sackboy the face of Playstation, so I can bet they were thinking of this title doing more than it has thus far.

SOCOM=It's a tactical shooter and a sequel to a multimillion selling franchise. Don't make excuses for it. No one knew about the server issues until it was purchased, so obviously the first week wasn't going to turn out so hot in the first place.

Motorstorm 2=It did just fine on reviews, so I don't see your point. It is a racer that failed miserably in both the US and in PAL terrirtories, and that shouldn't have happened.

Try not to make excuses and really look at things here. We are on the third holiday for PS3 and we are looking at a Fall software lineup underperforming across the board, with no exceptions. There is a problem here, and it's either advertising or Sony is frankly publishing the wrong titles that fit the PS3 demographic's interests. If they can't sell Resistance 2 like hot cakes, how do you expect them to sell Killzone 2? How well is Infamous going to do honestly looking at past titles? Sony is in a pickle because they have one headlining franchise that pulls in the massive dough(Gran Turismo) and it's going to be four holidays from launch until it comes out. None of these new titles have any real pull. They are being swept under the rug sales wise by multiplatform titles Sony is sharing and selling worse in, with 360 and PC. Nintendo and Microsoft both have multiple showcase titles that bring in some big cash, and they have all been released on a yearly basis.

Explain to me how Nintendo's 6 month old releases of Smash Bros., Wii Fit and Mario Kart are all still outselling Sony's new first party releases. Explain how 360's second biggest exclusive for Fall, Fable 2, is selling on par with all four combined Sony fall titles. So again I ask, is it the advertising or is Sony making the wrong games(from a sales perspective)?

this at worst will draw 360 owners, but with real marketing could be incredible. look at r2 for the low end and cod4 if done right.

i officially boycott boycotts.  crap.

It's an easy question really? Are you stoked for KZ2? Do you own a playstation 3?? If you say yes to both you know that it won't move systems all that much. And my guesstimation from this thread is that bar one person everyone will answer ith a double yes

Yes, it's the premiere FPS exclusive on the PS3 (at the moment), but the simple fact is that people don't want it. You can advertise on TV shows, ad breaks, newspapers, magazines, posters, and a BUILDING, but if people don't want to get the game, nothing is going to convince them. I think the first Resistance destroyed its credibility somewhat. People hate it, and refuse to believe it can IMPROVE. I'm not making this up by the way. These are the things my friends have said.

LBP was messed up by that launch, but I think Sony were pretty deluded if they expected a week 1 million seller. Too many PS3 owners see 'casual' and get put off. The casuals, in the meantime, are playing the Wii and 360 because they aren't going to pay 400 bucks for a console. That's not advertising, it's pricing.

SOCOM is a multiplayer only game. Those don't tend to sell overly well.

MotorStorm 2 has an 81 on metacritic. Looking at the holiday season, is a game like that going to survive? Look at Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts on the 360. Reviews are around the same, slightly higher in fact. Is it selling well? No.

Again, Sony is nowhere near the other two companies in advertising. But they're selling software better than they were before, right? Tools of Destruction has yet to cross 2 million, while Resistance 2 should do it by year's end.

The problem is that the PS3's demographic interests are extremely varied. This shone on the PS2, with its 120 million consoles in use. All great games got over 3 million sales, the really popular ones crossed 10 million. On the PS3, with a significantly smaller userbase, this doesn't work so well. The large majority of titles rest just over a million, and the most popular cross 3 million. So yes, they are in a pickle.

Gran Turismo will certainly help, getting great sales, but the only way Sony is going to get any ground in this gen is to get their userbase back to what it was in the PS2 era. Obviously, that's not going to happen, but nevertheless, they need to get consoles into homes. And I mean consoles, not blu-ray players.

The first step towards that is a price cut, coming early next year. That should start an upwards trend.

But going back to my earlier point, I suppose you were right. Sony aren't good at advertising, but they're improving. Enough to get Killzone 2 above 3 million units.
